Kathleen “Kitty” Prejean (98) a long time resident of Beaumont, Texas, passed away in Conroe, Texas on Monday, March 19, 2018. She was born Kathleen Lenora Miller on a farm in Bedias, Texas on December 16, 1919 to William Tell Miller and Susie Patterson Miller. As a young child, she and her mother (then divorced) moved to east Texas where her mother later married Buster H. Flowers from Honey Island. Kitty’s spent her early childhood in Saratoga and Honey Island and later moved with her parents, three sisters and one brother to Mont Belview, Texas, where she graduated from Barbers Hill High School in1938.
After High School, Kitty entered Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in Beaumont Texas. While in nursing school she met and married Henry Adam (Red) Prejean in 1939 and had for forgo her pursuit of a nursing career as rules of the day decreed that student nurses could not be married. Kitty and Red were married 56 years until his death in 1995. They had three boys, Richard, Edward and Tommy, all of whom graduated from South Park High School and Lamar University. Kitty later entered Lamar and finally earned her Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) degree in early 1970. She worked for and retired from the Lamar University Health Center in 1985. She moved to the Houston area in 2005.
Kitty is survived by her youngest sister, Edith Telford; her three sons, Richard, Edward (Patti), Tommy (Sallie); her stepson, Henry Adam (Hank) Jr. (Sylvia) and her Daughter-in–law Darlene Scott along with eleven grandchildren (Cindy Prejean, Flynn Prejean, Kourtnae Prejean, Christopher Prejean, Erik Prejean, Amy Prejean, Kayle Daley, Alix Prejean, Sherrie Nelson and Henry Prejean; fifteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother (Susie), father (Buster), brother (Buck), and two sisters (Nita & Alice) and granddaughter (Marcel).
Growing up during the Great Depression had an enduring effect on Kitty. She was hard working, devoted to family, extremely responsible and trustworthy, and loyal to her friends. After retiring, she did volunteer work at various retirement homes and assisted living facilities in the Beaumont area. She was careful about what she ate and exercised regularly. Her last place of residence was at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Conroe. She referred to herself as “farm stock” and there was no telling her that she couldn’t do anything.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 31st at 10:00 AM at Forest Park – The Woodlands Funeral Home.
