Kathy McGinness Haggard of Spring, Texas entered into rest on Sept. 9, 2021, in Houston, Texas. She was 74 years old. A memorial service will be held in November at Forest Park The Woodlands. Born in 1946 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Sylvia and Richard Henderson McGinness, Kathy grew up on a farm in Chickamauga, Georgia and participated in 4-H, winning many awards for her sewing and cooking. She graduated in 1964 from Lafayette High School in Georgia where she was chosen Most Beautiful in her class and was selected to the Homecoming Court. After graduation she attended Edmondson Junior College and then began working at American National Bank in downtown Chattanooga where she met the man who would soon be the love of her life, William (Bill) Haggard. In 1967 Kathy and Bill married at her home church Rock Spring United Methodist in Chickamauga. The couple had two children, Courtney Haggard Wellmann of College Station, Texas, and Kevin Haggard of Spring, Texas.
In the mid-1970s, Bill’s job took the family from Chattanooga to Bowling Green, Kentucky and then Marietta, Georgia, and in 1980 to Texas. Through all the moves, Kathy was steadfast in her care of her family, supporting her husband in his career and encouraging her children in their various academic and extracurricular endeavors. She met her best friend Serena Beach and family in Bowling Green, and they maintained their strong friendship over the years with Serena at her bedside when she passed.
After Kathy's children graduated from high school and finished college, Kathy and Bill lived in England and France for several years before returning to Texas and Mexico Beach, Florida. Kathy loved traveling, learning about new cultures, meeting new people, and tasting new foods. She enjoyed celebrating her grandchildren at their sporting events and dance and cheer competitions. Kathy also spent her time on genealogy research, reading, watching football, and walking the beach looking for shells and listening to the ocean. Throughout her life, Kathy was always a loyal and faithful friend and fan of those she loved.
Kathy is preceded in death by her husband, her mother and father, her brother Richard Roland McGinness, sister- and brother-in-law Delores (Haggard) and Lamar Burton, and sister- and brother-in-law Dona (Haggard) and Lewis Payne. Survivors include daughter Courtney, son-in-law Rodney Wellmann, their children Harrison and Chelsea; son Kevin, daughter-in-law Kristi, and children Meghan, Kaitlin, and Payton; brother- and sister-in-law Michael and Denise Haggard of Chattanooga; and many nieces and nephews and cousins in Tennessee, Georgia and Texas.
Memorials can be made to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association; the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association in Florida; or your local library.
