Doug was born June 20, 1946, in Omaha, Nebraska (Douglas County) to Grace Adelaide (Root) Wallingford and Lloyd Elsner Wallingford. He grew up in Falls Church, Virginia and graduated from George Mason High School. During this time, Doug helped to maintain the family-owned Wallingford Private School for kindergarten and first grade students. He loved music and was a skilled ballroom dancer and instructor. His love of music included singing in various church choirs and playing the trombone in high school and in the Washington Redskins Marching Band. He remained a loyal fan of the Redskins football team throughout his life.
Doug met his wife Rheba in 1967 while she was visiting her sister Fran in Arlington, Virginia. They were married June 22, 1968. He graduated from American University, in Washington D.C., in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. In 1972 they moved to San Antonio, Texas where Doug was employed by an accounting firm. After many years in corporate accounting, he went into business for himself until he recently retired.
Doug served in many leadership roles throughout his career including treasurer within the church and various accounting and neighborhood associations. He enjoyed traveling with Rheba and his family. Some of his passions were classic cars, auto mechanics, hunting, bowling, tennis, and he was a meticulous craftsman. He played USTA League Tennis for many years and qualified for Nationals on several occasions. It gave him great joy watching and playing tennis with his daughter and grandson.
He and his wife Rheba moved to Conroe, Texas in March of 2021 to be near family. Soon after moving to Conroe, he was able to purchase his dream car; a classic 1932 Plymouth 2 door sedan. This car was the ultimate retirement gift to himself. Doug and wife Rheba have felt very blessed by the generous and loving neighbors where God has placed them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grace Adelaide Wallingford and Lloyd Elsner Wallingford. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Rheba, daughters Kerry Dowda and husband Jeff of Pipe Creek, TX, April Wenzel and husband Kevin of Spring, TX, and grandchildren Ashley O’Kelley, Kristi Dowda, Courtney Dowda, Blake Wenzel, and Addison Wenzel, and great grandchildren Brayden and Kairan O’Kelley.
