Marcella Mayeur, born Marcella Mewing in October 1924, in Leola, South Dakota and was raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She was the daughter of the late Magdalene Opp and Earle Mewing and was the older sister of the late Bud Mewing and younger sister of the late Earlene Chetwood. Marcella departed this earthly life surrounded by her sons in Woodlands, TX. on Wednesday April 5, 2023, at the age of ninety-eight.
Marcella is survived by her three loving sons Gary Smith (wife Cathy) from Marietta, GA., Roger Smith (wife Peggy) from The Woodlands, TX., and Randy Smith (wife Diane) from McKinney, TX., seven grandchildren; Dr. Lauren Smith , Carolyn Smith, Eric Smith (wife Holly), Evan Smith (wife Katie), Logan Riise (husband Cody), Jourdan Smith and Robert Smith, and four great grandchildren Milo Smith, Jove Smith, Barrett Smith and Asher Riise.
Nana, as she liked to be called by her children and grandchildren, had very little growing up in the small town of Aberdeen, South Dakota. Her family had difficulty making ends meet but she had a happy childhood ice skating on frozen rivers, going to movies for ten cents, riding milk trucks to visit her cousins, and learning to dance at the local YMCA. The small-town values she acquired in Aberdeen remained with her for her lifetime. As WWII was nearing an end, this small-town girl left home to begin a new life in Washington D. C. and she was soon working in the Pentagon, dancing at the USO Club and fending off sailors right and left. By the early 1950’s she was raising three boys and working long hours as a single mom to support her boys. She instilled in her boys the importance of honesty, family and faith. Sunday mornings meant dressing up to go to their Lutheran Church.
Moving to New Orleans in 1969 was another life-changing event. While there she traveled the world, started an Over 30 Disco Club, founded and remained President of the Let’s Dance Club for 25 years, added significantly to her collection of vintage Hats and became an avid tennis player. In 1990 she married Alfred Mayeur, the Love-of-her-Life. Al was a quiet gentle man that adored Marcella.
Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Marcella and Al moved to The Woodlands where she quickly became a Texan and cultivated numerous friendships. She has touched the lives of hundreds of young girls by hosting Tea Parties to teach them etiquette and was active in local social events. She felt her purpose in her later years was to make someone happy every day, make someone smile, and to spend time with loved ones. Faith, Family and Friends were all important to Marcella and she cherished every minute creating her lifetime of memories. She loved life to the fullest. Marcella passed away on April 5th which is the same day that Al passed away. God clearly played a role in this timing.
