Michael C Huckaby, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on March 6th, 2026, in The Woodlands, TX. Mick was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 28th, 1943. Mick spent his formative years in Shawnee Mission, enjoying life as the older brother to Tim and Joe. They spent their days playing baseball, riding bikes, and making memories with their cousins. In high school, Mick played tennis and was part of the school newspaper, where he interviewed JFK.
After a brief service in the Air Force, Mick attended college at Kansas State. It was here that he met Kathy, the love of his life. They married in 1966 and began a life together that would take them to Missouri, New Jersey, and eventually Texas. Along the way, Mick and Kathy expanded their family to include three Carin Terriers. Mick adored one so much that when he found out he was expecting a daughter, he decided to name her Jamie after his favorite pup.
Mick was an involved father from the start. Whether flying Jamie around the house in her supergirl pajamas or teaching her to spell her name to a song he made up to the tune of Bingo, he made sure that Jamie felt loved every day. Mick’s work frequently took him out of town during the week, flying millions (yes, millions!) of miles over the years. He still spent every weekend cheering Jamie on at softball, swim meets, and basketball games. He showed the same enthusiasm and love for his granddaughters, Hazel and Iris.
Mick worked many jobs over the course of his career: Tower Loan, Safeway Bakery, consulting at Saybolt and Core Laboratory, managing at the Forum, and writing weekly food and movie reviews at the Courier. He always brought his unique perspective and people skills to the job. Many colleagues became lifelong friends.
He enjoyed golfing with his best buddy Jake, playing over 900 rounds (he kept track!) before he hung up his clubs. He enjoyed cheering on his and Kathy’s favorite teams (Jayhawks and Chiefs) and always looked forward to his annual March Madness bracket. He was a collector of many things, with wooden boxes and petrified wood being his favorites to seek out.
Mick was fun-loving and found the humor in most situations. He was prone to making a joke and finding it so funny that he would laugh until he cried. Mick loved the simple things: a cheeseburger (well done), good Mexican food, Route 44 Sonic Drinks, and a slice of cherry pie. He could never get enough cinnamon candy and popcorn.
Mick will be missed beyond measure by his wife, Kathy Huckaby, his daughter, Jamie Edmondson, her husband Stephen, and his granddaughters Hazel and Iris. His brother Tim Huckaby, brother-in-law Bill Bader, and his wife Sylvia, his sister-in-law Wendy Huckaby, niece Sarah, and nephews TJ, Matthew, and Jeff.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Maxine and MC “Huck” Huckaby, and his brother Joe Huckaby.
Services honoring his life will be held at The Woodlands Methodist Church on March 20th at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you have a good laugh, a slice of cherry pie, and a handful of cinnamon popcorn. Since Mick was so fond of his cat Black Jack, consider donating to your local animal shelter.
