She was born on Sunday, September 16, 1956, in the country of Trinidad and Tobago, to the late Wilfred and Alphonsine Gene.
She met the love of her life at nineteen years old and she and Mukesh Singh wed a year and a half later on Tuesday, October 25, 1977. They celebrated 43 years of marriage before her passing. They shared five amazing boys and welcomed four daughters into their family. Additionally, they shared a life with Ana Becerra, who was like a sister to Millie.
Millie and Mukesh moved to Lafayette, Louisiana in 1990 and she pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, graduating in 1994. In 2005, she received a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Our Lady of the Lake University, graduating with a 3.9 GPA. She was a founding member of the St. Luke’s hospital system in The Woodlands, Texas and was employed there for thirteen years. She loved her work as a nurse and med-surg floor manager and she was greatly admired, respected, and loved by her peers, patients, fellow nurses and all of those with whom she worked. She especially loved being a mentor to new and upcoming nursing staff. In 2019, she returned to her first love as a nurse, working directly in patient care at Memorial Hermann, in The Woodlands, Texas.
Diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2006, Millie never lost her faith. She never blamed anyone or anything for her illness. She was always supported by her family and friends, and she never, ever gave up. She was a devout, practicing Hindu who loved her God, cherished the Hindu culture and all of its teachings, and leaned on her unwavering faith for strength during the journey. She was ever-so-true to the Hindu religion, but embraced and respected all cultures and beliefs. Millie’s church was in her heart, in which God always had a warm place to visit and stay.
Millie loved her family above all. She was most proud of her boys. She was an avid Sudoku player, loved to read mystery/detective books, play word games and brain puzzles, and garden. She was a consummate chef of all kinds of foods and everyone who knew her loved her incredible cooking. Millie never met a recipe that she couldn’t turn into a mouth-watering meal for family and friends. She was also a lover of all animals, especially the ones nearest and dearest to her heart, particularly Spike, a Cocker Spaniel, her late German Shepherd, Mikey, and her late kitties, Ivan and Oreo.
Millie is remembered for her strength, pragmatism, kindness and unending service to others. Her contagious smile, infectious laugh, and optimistic personality would light up any room she entered. She is also remembered for her altruism, open arms and the perpetual willingness to help. She always placed importance on treating others with the utmost respect and she was a person of undeniable integrity.
