Jay was born on March 22, 1940, to Myrtle May Cecil and Robert Leon Slaymaker in Scott Depot, West Virginia. His family moved to Okmulgee, Oklahoma when he was a young boy and later settled in Brownwood, Texas.
After six years of service in the U.S. Army, Jay sold cars at Holley Chevrolet and Weatherby Motor Co, worked for Moore Business Forms, and then moved to Houston where he was sales manager at National Mark-It. He founded Labels Etc. in Conroe, Texas in 1987 and served as president until he retired in December 2013.
Upon retirement he and Jeanne traveled for many years with their many friends. He enjoyed going on cruises anywhere, gambling, and eating delicious food, especially fried chicken and breakfast at any time of day. He had an infectious laugh, charming and mischievous bright baby blue eyes, and cherished dinners with his family and friends. He played Zilch, relished monthly birthday group celebrations with his friends, and was a season ticket holder to the Oilers and Texans for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jeanne; son Jayson Slaymaker; daughter Jennifer Edmoundson and son-in-law Terry Edmoundson; step-son Dwayne Miles and wife Joanne; grandchildren Brittany Edmoundson, Josh Miles and wife Holly, and Mark Miles; and brother Bill Slaymaker and wife Ann. He was preceded in death by his mother Myrtle, father Robert, brothers Robert and Herman, and sister Martha.
Jay was an incredibly generous and kind husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
His Celebration of Life will be at Forest Park The Woodlands at 10am on August 1, 2025.
