Ros Hackney Brown, 71 years of age, resident of The Woodlands, Texas, died unexpectedly on December 7th, 2022, after a short hospitalization. Ros was born in Tallulah, Louisiana, on October 19th, 1951, the fifth of six children to Dorothy and Mark Brown.
Ros’ first career was in the galvanizing industry where he excelled managing a large plant in Charlotte, North Carolina. During that time, he was involved with and held leadership positions in national industry organizations. After his move to Texas, Ros began the pursuit of his second career. Always a numbers man, he decided to shift his focus to accounting at Sam Houston State University graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.
He joined the firm of Bickley & Prescott upon graduation, receiving his license as a Certified Public Accountant under the tutelage of Mr. Bickley & Mr. Prescott. He was a member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Ros prided himself on helping his clients navigate landmines laid by life’s uncertainties and the Internal Revenue Service so they could focus on the enjoyment of time with their loved ones and pursuit of their dreams. Ros excelled at teaching everyone who was willing to learn that money was best used as a tool on the road of life rather than a singularly focused destination.
He retired from his full-time employment in 2020 yet remained active in his professional assistance to select clients. Ros approached his retirement with a similar level of vigor and discipline. He spent hours learning how to play chess and then playing competitively online. He also enjoyed time with his son-in-law, Ryan, at the gun range. His afternoons were spent devouring Agatha Christie novels. He had his latest three delivered the day he died.
While his professional achievements and personal interests are notable, Ros was dismissive of their stature in relation to the primary love and focus he had for his family. Ros typified calm, steadfast devotion to all those lucky enough to have been loved by him. This was most apparent in his efforts to ensure that he spent time with each of his three grandchildren. They know that their Papa’s favorite thing to do was always what they were most interested in at the moment. Their Papa was an expert in Bruder trucks, Transformers, Minecraft, Disney princesses, makeup, and anime books. The title of “Papa Ros” was undoubtedly his most treasured.
Ros is survived by his beloved wife, best friend and soulmate, Susan. He is also survived by his children Kate and Ryan Porter of The Woodlands and Maggie Dyer of Dallas; his grandchildren, Woodrow “Row” Robert Dyer, IV; Madeleine Grace Porter and Hannah Elise Porter. He has several siblings, nieces and nephews that mourn his parting as well.
