

Sam Schwartz died on April 5, 2025 at home in Montgomery, Texas with his loving wife, Barbara, by his side. He was born in East New York, Brooklyn, in 1934. His parents, David and Ida (Darci) Schwartz, arrived in the United States from Ukraine in 1914. Sam attended PS174 on Williams Avenue, PS109 Jr. High in Brownsville, and Thomas Jefferson High School on Pennsylvania Ave in East NY, graduating with the class of 1952.
He spent 1953 to 1955 in the Quartermaster Corp of the United States Army, stationed in Fort Lee, after completing basic training at Fort Dix. Almost immediately, he shipped out to Japan and spent eighteen months stationed in Kokura, Japan before returning stateside. He returned to 393 Hinsdale St, Brooklyn 7, the home where he grew up, living with his mother and sister. His father died while he was in Japan. Sam completed a degree in Economics at Brooklyn College while working at a bank in Manhattan. He also attended the Jewish Congregation, where he met lifelong friends; Phil Wernick, Sheldon Gleiberman, Gerald Berger and Bernie Pechter. He obtained his Customs Broker license while working for his brother Ike’s firm.
In 1981, he started his own brokerage firm, Sam Schwartz CHB, Inc. at JFK International Airport. His brother Ike continued working with Sam until Ike’s retirement in 1990. Sam met the love of his life, Barbara, in 1986, after being introduced by his nephew Irwin, and Barbara’s close friend Rosemary. Sam and Barbara were married on December 10, 1989 at Leonard’s of Great Neck, New York. They lived in Bayside, Queens until Sam’s retirement in 1999.
In 2008, they moved to Montgomery, Texas to be near Barbara’s daughter Julie, son-in-law Mike, and granddaughter Emily, who he was especially close to. Sam and Barbara were together for 39 wonderful years and explored many amazing places around the United States and world together, including Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, Italy, Greece, France, England, Switzerland, Germany and Turkey. Sam loved his restored 1942 Ford, playing and watching golf, the Yankees baseball team, watching old movies, reading, painting, puzzles, traveling with Barbara, Rosemary and Irwin, exploring the National Parks, and spending time with family.
Sam was predeceased by his brother Isaac Schwartz and his sisters Sylvia Schwartz, Mollie Raiman, Helen Shooten. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his sister Ann (Honey) Walerstein, his children Darrin and Jenni, his step-children Monique and Julie, and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home & Cemetery, The Woodlands, Texas on Friday, April 11, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow directly at Forest Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Sam’s honor may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation
