Samille Torbert Grove, known for her brilliant blue eyes, her charming Southern accent, and her sharp mind, passed away August 4th, 2015, at the age of 92, in the compassionate care of Houston Hospice. There, her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren visited and comforted her in her last days.
She was born and raised in Greensboro, GA, attended Oglethorpe College and joined Chi Omega sorority in Atlanta, where she met and married Bob Grove, who was at Georgia Tech and served in the Army Corps of Engineers during WW II. They had two daughters, Carolyn and Barbara, and relocated to Texas in the 50's.
Millie went to work, first as a bookstore clerk, and then as a bank teller from the mid 60's to the mid 70's, to help pay for her daughters' education. Then she and Bob had a custom house built on a wooded lot in a lush, green Atlanta suburb.
After Bob retired, in 1988, they moved to Lake Conroe, to be close to her daughter Carolyn and her family in Houston. There, Millie had the time of her life involved in civic and social activities, a contributing member of the April Sound Church, and various volunteer roles at the library, meals on wheels, and the Montgomery County Historical Society.
In 2005, she and Bob moved to a retirement complex in Houston, to be even closer to daughters and family. Bob passed away that same year, and Millie stayed on, enjoying the community and being close to new friends. She revisited her hometown, Greensboro, GA. and friends there for the last time in 2007. Ultimately, she was the last of 5 sisters and the last of her best Greensboro friends to survive.
She was an avid and gifted bridge player, which might have contributed to her mind remaining sharp to the end.
Millie is survived by her daughters: Barbara Grove and Carolyn Corbett & husband Doug; grandchildren: Mark Melton & wife Amy, Matt Melton & wife Jenni, Margaret DeYoung & husband Joel; step-grandchildren: Matt Corbett and Claire Corbett; and great-grandchildren: Max Melton, Daphne Melton, Haddon Melton, and Marin Melton.
A graveside remembrance gathering will be held on Saturday, October 10th at 11:00 AM at Forest Park The Woodlands Cemetery, with the Rev. Doctor Matt Grove Melton presiding.
