Shirley was born in Dallas, Texas on December 23, 1933, the eldest daughter of Ernest Winson and Lorene Mae (Simmons) Quick. She grew up in Oak Cliff, attending Hillcrest Baptist Church where she gave her heart to Jesus Christ at seven years old. She also attended the local public schools, graduating from W.H. Adamson High School in 1951. She attended North Texas State College in Denton, only to be preempted to get married in August,1952.
For twenty-six years, she was a faithful wife and mother. Multiple moves to different cities and regions provided a backdrop while raising two boys and one girl. She attended many little league baseball games, school concerts, and track and cross country meets. She made our home welcome to all our friends. It was a safe place to be.
After her divorce, she entered the workforce. Her first job was as an administrative assistant at Texas Medical Center Inc. A few years later, she followed one of her bosses to serve in the Southwest Memorial Hospital Public Affairs Department. That was one of her favorite gigs. She finished her career as Volunteer Coordinator at Harris County Psychiatric Center. She retired in 1999.
One of her great avocations was performing as a clown with the Cheerful Clown Alley. Her stage name was MizQ. Clowning gave her an outlet for one of her great gifts-her sense of humor.
One memorable event she participated in was the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo parade. Her two grandsons, Corey and Kyle, dressed up as clowns and joined her in the parade. All clown activities were performed as a volunteer. She even had to attend Clown School.
Another one of Mom’s interests was genealogy. She frequently was on Ancestry.com. She purportedly traced her lineage all the way back to Adam and Eve. Here, her sense of humor comes out again.
Mom also was our chief recorder. Her photos and 35mm movies captured many memories of the places we lived. For example, all three of us kids remember much of our time in Boston. Visiting cousins and other family members joined us when we toured the Freedom Trail and other historical sites. She made it her passion to document our lives together.
Love and ongoing prayers have been offered for her by her church family at Living Water Church of Spring, Texas. A remembrance service is being held there on August 15 at 10am.
Shirley was a devoted mother to her three surviving children: Gary Michael Hickman; Gregory Winson Hickman and his wife Elizabeth; and Julie Ann (Hickman) McCluskey and her husband Gary. She was blessed to have four grandchildren and five great grandchildren, with two more on the way. She also will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her dearly. There is no doubt that she has found a new home in the Kingdom of Heaven.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister; Martha Sue (Quick) Gumm.
The family would like to thank the staff at Park Manor of The Woodlands for their loving and thoughtful care for Shirley as a resident there for the past five years.
Family graveside services will be arranged soon at her family plot at Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that contributions be made to Living Water Church of Spring, Texas.
