Sosamma Eapen Thomas was born May 15, 1943 in Kaviyoor, Kerala, India to Pastor Parapuzha Varghese (P.V.) Eapen and Mariamma Eapen, two great pioneers in Christendom in their homeland of Kerala. She was raised in a household of faith and committed her life at an early age to Jesus Christ. She lived her life to the fullest in serving God and showing the Love of God to Humanity. Sosamma survived a devastating injury to her thumb in 1961 causing severe septicemia and she was very near death when in faith her parents through fervent prayer saw her completely healed. She became a living testimony to the Grace and Mercy of Jehovah Rapha our Healer whom she knew personally at that young age and whom she walked with throughout her life, praying for the sick and bringing hope to the hopeless.
Sosamma married Kanjappallil Abraham Thomas (Thomaskutty) on May 3, 1962 in Kizhakanmuthoor, Kerala….and this is the rest of the story…….
Sosamma had a deep passion to teach children and therefore she studied and became a grade school teacher in 1962. Along with obtaining her teaching degree, she became a mother of their first child Annie who was born in 1963. It was in 1964 that her husband Pastor Thomaskutty, then National Sunday School and Youth Director of the Church of God India, was invited to visit The United States of America to pursue his theological studies. Sosamma soon followed and traveled to be with Thomaskutty (struggling deeply with having to leave behind her daughter in India for 2 years but in the protective arms of loving grandparents) and began pursuit of higher education at Murray State University, Paducah, Kentucky in the BSN Nursing Program and subsequently obtained her Registered Nurse (RN) Degree in Peoria, Illinois. A son was born to the couple in 1966 and he was named Abraham. Annie was able to come to be with her Mommy, Daddy and new baby brother and the family was complete. For the next fifty-nine years Sosamma was the most amazing, compassionate, loving, caring, talented, deeply committed wife and mother to her husband and children, giving every ounce of her being in devotion to her family both near and far.
Sosamma had an active career as a Registered Nurse, working in the VA Hospital System as well as Private Hospitals throughout Illinois, Georgia, Texas, California and Colorado. She worked in the Medical and Surgical units as well as finished her career working in Labor and Delivery which brought her immense joy as she helped many families in caring for them in the births of their children, many of them who still remember fondly the gentle nurse who prayed with them at the bedside.
Sosamma and Thomaskutty had a lifetime of love and deep friendship with one another, nurturing and growing their children into young adults and then praying for and supporting them into their own careers and their own families. Sosamma was loved and cherished by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was beloved Mother to many “children” around the world whether in churches or orphanages or Bible Schools or in the Sewing School that she and Pastor Thomaskutty created and supported with over 10 graduating classes loving her and calling her Ammama or Ammachi. That is her legacy---bringing life and love to those in need.
Her fragrance and her beauty touched almost every continent as Sosamma and Pastor Thomaskutty traveled the world planting churches and bringing light and life to a dark and needy world. Their Legacy was celebrated recently in the 50th Anniversary of International Christian Assembly of God, a church which they planted ever so long ago with great vision beginning in their living room in Chicago Illinois and now a thriving International Church in the heart of “The Great Metropolis of the Midwest”.
Their life together brought hope to many families and touched thousands of lives as they made possible a life in the USA for those who may not have been able to see beyond their villages if Sosamma and Thomaskutty had not been willing to outstretch their hand or fix the broken hearted with a smile, a prayer, and a sponsorship letter……many families within the reach of these words can attest to that fact and are ever so very grateful.
Sosamma lost the love of her life, her precious Thomaskutty on November 28, 2021……the indelible grief of this great loss was felt in her heart and manifested in her own health complications. Sosamma went to Jesus and to her sweet Thomaskutty surrounded by the love and sweet songs and prayers of her Siblings, Children, Nieces and Nephews, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren on July 5th, 2025 at 9:10 PM. Her face shone and her eyes were beholding the wonder of things yet to be seen for those that she left behind.
