07/03/1927 – 07/30/2023
Wayne Lofton Atkins, of Houston, TX, passed away at 97 years of age on the morning of July 30th 2023, at home with his son Stephen and daughter-in-law Mary at his side. Wayne will be interred, beside his wife, Nell, at Budde Cemetery in Spring, Tx.
Wayne was a proud veteran of WWII, having served as a Pfc 1st class in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and carried his discharge papers in his wallet (his mini filing cabinet) until the day he passed.
Wayne and Nell moved to the Houston area following the merger of United Gas Transmission Company of Shreveport, Louisiana with the Pennzoil Company in 1975. Wayne was Chief Draftsman with United Gas and then Pennzoil for approximately 30 years. His favorite past times included spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, camping, and travel.
He is survived by his sons: Michael Wayne and wife Susan from Kilgore, TX; David Glenn and wife Paula, from Minden, Louisiana; and Stephen Christopher and wife Mary from Houston, TX. Grand children: Brian, Jennifer, Andrew, Patrick, Christina, Sarah, Stephen and great grandchildren: Trevor, Alex, Jack, Connor, Jaxson, Tucker, Ella and Sully.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of 50+ years, Nell Jeter Atkins; his parents Burton Lofton Atkins and Blanche Atkins; sisters Geraldine Biery and Imogene Knight; and granddaughter Cindy Cline.
Wayne’s greatest blessings in this life was his family. He loved having all three sons and their families visit at the same time and a raucous time always ensued.
Visitation will be at Forest Park Funeral Home in The Woodlands, TX on Friday, August 4th, from 2pm until 4pm. A private family graveside service will be held Saturday, August 5th.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Mimi’s Caring Angels for coordinating home health care for Wayne. Special thanks to Karen Sherwood for the diligent, gentle and loving care she provided day in and day out for our father. Secondly, the family extends a heartfelt thanks to Maribel Blandon for her dependable and meticulous work of keeping our father's house in order. Thirdly, we would like to acknowledge the tireless and steadfast assistance of Sarah’s husband Fred Luna in caring for Pop, his house, and car over the years.
That man is a success who has lived well,
laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent
men and women and the love of children;
who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
who leaves the world better than he found it,
who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty nor failed to express it;
who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.
Robert Louis Stevenson
