Born on March 19, 1944, in Burnsville, NC, Betty was a woman of deep faith whose life reflected God’s love, grace, and kindness. The Phillips family relocated to Thomasville in 1975, where Betty resided for the remainder of her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Oscar Albert Phillips, who passed away on March 25, 2015.
Betty was a gifted seamstress, using her talents to create countless wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, and prom dresses over the years—each stitch and seam crafted with care and love. She was also a gifted cook. She prepared delicious meals for the family nearly every Sunday as the house rang out with cheers and laughter during their Nintendo championships. She also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: solving puzzles and cheering on the Atlanta Braves and the UNC Tar Heels. Her greatest joy, however, was found in her faith and her family, both of which she held dear in her heart.
Betty was a faithful servant who was a source of love and strength to all who knew her. She was lovingly known as “Mom” to her three children: Tammy Phillips of Thomasville, Rocky Phillips of Burnsville, NC, and Tonya Hunter (Tom) of Hampton, VA. She was “Mamaw” to her cherished grandchildren: Joshua Johnson (Stephanie) of Thomasville, Daniel Johnson (Heather) of Lexington, Amanda Phillips of Thomasville, and Hannah Hutchins of Lexington. Her legacy continues through her four great-grandchildren—Bella Phillips, Mason Griffin (Meghan), Aamon Burchett, and Reagan Burchett-Langston (Jeremy), and two great-great-grandchildren, Lucas and Lawson Griffin.
She is also survived by her brother, Mike Hensley (Carolyn) of Burnsville, NC; and nieces, Lacey Good (Edwin) and Kaley Aldridge (Mark).
Betty’s love for Christ was evident in all she did. Her life was a testament to her Savior, and her kindness, generosity, and steadfast devotion to family and faith will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. While she will be deeply missed, her family rejoices in knowing she is now resting in the arms of Jesus, welcomed home with the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
The Phillips family would like to give their sincerest thanks to Hospice of Davidson County for taking great care of Betty during her last moments on Earth, specifically Jaclyn Atkinson and Jordan Lambeth.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 4:30 pm in the chapel at Sechrest-Davis of Thomasville, with Pastor Josh Sellers officiating. The family will receive family and friends an hour and a half before the service, starting at 3:00 pm.
