A resident of this area all of his life, Mr. Johnson was born on November 13, 1926 in Davidson County, a son to the late Lawrence Roosevelt and Ila Kay Sink Johnson. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army and had worked for many years as a mechanic in Davidson County. He was affectionately known as “The Lawnmower King of Thomasville” and there was not anything he could not fix. In fact, he was the go-to source for all of his family and friends when it came to repairing or servicing lawnmowers, tractors, and automobiles.
He was a true servant of his Lord and Savior and had been a dedicated member of Gospel Baptist Church in Archdale dating back to 1971. As a member of the church, he served as Trustee, Deacon, and was a past Sunday School Superintendent.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Frances Kiger, Kenneth Johnson, and Ronnie Johnson.
Surviving are his wife of over 68 years, Joan Bowers Johnson of the home; daughter, Katherine Stevenson and husband Roger of Thomasville; son, Terry Johnson and wife Clarice of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Aaron Johnson and Rachel Davis and husband Neiman; and three sisters, Elsie Woodring, Jean Myers and husband Wayne, and Juanita Swaim.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am Tuesday, March 20 at Gospel Baptist Church in Archdale with Pastor Stephen Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Monday, March 19 at Thomasville Funeral Home.
