Richard Harold Hicks, 87, of Thomasville, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021. He was born on September 16, 1933 in Randolph Co., NC to the late Carl and Viola Kindley Hicks.

Richard retired from the City of Thomasville after more than 30 years with the Water Department. Richard and his wife Arlene were owner/operator of Hicks Grocery, aka "The Liars Club" since the early 1970's, closing in 2000. Hicks Grocery was the focal point of the community for nearly 30 years with countless hours spent by many generations telling stories (lies) on the front bench, playing a game of Rook with friends, or drinking a cold bottle of Coke filled with peanuts. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He loved antique tractors and owned at least 25 over the years.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Leo Bates for her compassionate care of Dad. Also they would like to thank The Cottage at Spring Arbor of Thomasville and Amedysis Hospice for their excellent care. Richard is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 44 years, Arlene Petry Hicks; son, Lynn Hicks; brothers, LC Hicks, TJ Hicks, Roland Hicks and Hoyt Hicks; sisters, Ruby Gallimore, Beatrice Summey and Chrissy Jane Smith.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Suggs (Tim); son, Rodney Hicks; brothers, Boogie Hicks, David Hicks (Janet), Hollis Hicks (Elaine) and Dallas Hicks; sisters, Julia Ruth Tharpe and Donese Trotter (Jimmy); grandchildren, Lauren Benfield (Jason), Whitley Boyer (Brandon) and Madison Suggs; his 7 great grandchildren and a mess of loving nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Richard’s name to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, care of Chuck Hall, 186 Underwood Drive, Thomasville, NC 27360.

Visitation for Richard will take place on Friday, February 19, 2021 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Sechrest-Davis Funerals & Cremations (formerly Thomasville Funeral Home). Years ago when I was driving for Harris teeter I would stop by the store and get a Mickey oatmeal cookie. Arlene and Richard were always there and Richard would say here comes Tim's brother! I always enjoyed talking to Richard while I ate my cookie and a cold Coke.
