He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 30 years, Galina Lazareva, his step-daughter, Olga Lazareva and her spouse, Sanjay Desai, his immediate family, and his many friends. And his devoted dog Johnny and cat, Lisa.
Born into a family with generations of history in Odessa, Alex came from a line of sailors and was a merchant marine captain who sailed the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans catching all manner of fish and seafood and particularly Pacific King Crab. He grew up in Odessa attending naval school there, spent many years in Vladivostok where he met and married his beautiful and devoted wife, Galina and captained his own boat selling seafood in Russia and Japan.
To give his step-daughter a chance at a better life, him and Galina immigrated to Canada in 1999 and settled in Toronto, ON. In Canada he quickly became productive and impactful driving big rig trucks for a living all across Canada and the USA and building a large and loving group of friends.
Alex was a bear of man with an equally large heart. You would never go hungry or be without a good laugh in his company as he was a great storyteller, gregarious and a great cook of fish, seafood, shashlik, barbecue, birds, meat, soups and eastern European and Asian recipes he had picked up from his Mom and in his travels. He also loved to smoke fish, engaged in “quiet hunting” for the best forest mushrooms and harvested wild herbs to delight his friends and family with aromatic teas. Whether at his dinner table, in a backyard, camping or at a cottage, evenings in his company were always magical.
He will be very missed but the family will keep alive his spirit and love of nature, the sea and taking care of family, friends and pets.
Funeral Visitation and Service will be held at Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home, 8088 Yonge Street, Thornhill L4J 1W3 at 10:00AM to Noon on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 following which the family will travel with him to Briar Hill Cemetery, 5500 Black River Road, Sutton, ON L0E 1R0 where he will be buried close to a white birch tree.
