Dear Aunt Marg, We are deeply saddened with the passing of Uncle Art. Uncle Art had a gift of making everybody feel welcome. He always engaged with us in a warm and caring way. It was such a shock to hear the sad news of Art's illness and death. My sincere condolences to Marg and all the family. Art and I worked at Honeywell Information Systems for many, many years. Art was my very first Career Mentor when I started working for Honeywell IS in 1981 after graduating from the University of Waterloo. His 2-hour welcoming, west coast lunch when I arrived for training in Vancouver Branch, remains vivid in my mind to this very day. Fragrant pipe tobacco (exactly like my Grandfather's), and a smiling, sturdy, tall, philosophical, reflective and confident stature are my first and lasting impressions. Art ultimately guided me back to Toronto where I enjoyed a rewarding career. He would later relocate himself and I would be working for him once again. Art, my thoughts are with You and Yours at this time.

Dear Aunt Margaret, Laura, Sam, Tommy & families: We were so sorry to hear about the sudden passing of Uncle Art. He was a wonderful man and will really be missed. I knew Art when I worked at Honeywell. He was always a pleasure to be with and great company. A really good guy. My sincerest condolences to the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Art,s passing. At Honeywell I worked with Marg before Art came over with the GE merger and then for many years with Art. He seemed to never change---always very calm and cool. Our thoughts are with you Marg and the whole family at this difficult time.

We will always remember the big smile, laugh and of course the many stories from Art. Reading these tributes to Art brings back many memories of days 50 years ago.



	I had the privilege of hiring Art at General Electric and then laughed through many years at GE and Honeywell. There were two others I hired at the same time Bob Juneau and Deiter Fischer. Believe it or not Art was the shortest of the three.



	After completing all the paper work I invited the three to join me for lunch, and as we walked in downtown Montreal I felt at 5'11" like a kid out with adults.                                                                                                          



	There were many enjoyable stories over the years of fun, cards, laughs and the odd drink through our time at GE and Honeywell.

I want to share a beautiful memory of Art, by myself and the late Bob Snider of both General Electric and Honeywell. Art and Bob shared a great and wonderful friendship and loved to laugh, play poker of course and we raised our children together and had such memories of fond memories of vacations at Sunnycrest Lodge. I was also his secretary too. He trained me well and we thought the world of him. Bob had the pleasure of delivering a wonderful speech at his wedding and I thank Marg and Art for all the support they have given me to this day. Art will live on forever in all our hearts and may his family forever remember him as a handsome, kind,funny and rare human being. My deepest sympathy to all of you. May you all support each other as he would want you too through your journey of grief.

So sorry to hear the sad news of "Uncle Art" but always Art to me, and so close in age as well. My mother, his sister Annie, and the entire Krause family and Lynda even before we married always enjoyed the best of times when we lived in Point Pelee and Art and the entire Mathies family joined us for fish frys, corn boils, playing cards, and whatever. Lynda and I continued to enjoy Art's company even after we moved to Cape Breton so many years ago, with our visitis to Ontario and his to our land here. As Louise says: "Too sad". My husband and I with our 3 daughters moved to Montreal when husband was transferred there.  I heard that I had a first cousin living in Montreal and was given the information to look him up.  Which I did and we met.  It was time for him to come visit us in our home and I notified all the neighbours that a movie star was coming to visit.  Sorry - can't remember the star's name, but Art was a perfect double.  Anyway, when Art showed up all the neighbours were standing in their windows waiting to get a glimpse.  Yes, I told the truth after he left.  That was Art - tall and handsome, with a terrific personality.  I really miss him.  Till we meet again, dear Cuz.

My first chldhood memory of Uncle Art was around the late 50's early 60's. I'd be about 10.  He showed up at our house in Ruthven one day with a football for my brother James and myself  and played ball with us.   I've always remembered the feeling of how "neat" that was for him to do that with us.  Eventually the ball got  kicked over the fence into the asparagus field which for my brother and I always meant a long trek around all the nieghbours fenced yards .... but wait a minute .... we see Uncle Art gaining speed as he heads towards the fence and ... woah !  ... he hurdles the fence in a single leap, gets the ball then again hurdles the fence back into the yard.  I remember how amazing that was to me as a kid and how I thought this guy is like the guy on one of my favourite TV shows - Superman.



	   As it turned out Uncle Art was a super man in many ways. He had the ability to interact with people in a wonderful way and obviously genuinely enjoyed it which took him on an impressive journey. A good hearted, hard working, intellegent and fun man. His wit of having the perception to connect happennings and see the ammusement in them and then share his stories was unique and entertaining.  



	    From my experience and memories as a youngster of spending time with my Gramma and Grampa Mathies I feel Art and his brothers and sisters were truly blessed to receive some very important guidance of kind and keen words of wisdom to help them in life.



	I thank Uncle Art for picking us up hitch hiking back in the day, squeeling the tires when we asked, saving the day getting my overstuffed suitcase closed and us to the airport in the nic of time, being there for us when Dad passed and all his hospitality.



	 I'd hope that Art meets up with brother Bill (my Dad) so they can play Cribbage again because I've never seen two guys any happier than the many times I sat and watched them play.



	Uncle Arts departure will leave a large void here. May we find comfort in loving memories.

Worked with Art for many years at Honeywell. Although sadenned by his passing, I can't help but smile when thinking about Art. He was always cheerful and chuckling. His stories and love of life legendary. My condolences to the family.

I remember the first time I met Uncle Art; he was so kind and friendly; he welcomed me into the family with open arms. He was funny and handsome and BIG! It was a little surreal to meet Uncle Art because he reminded me so much of my husband (Dave) - but in the future!  I will miss you Uncle Art, Love Pam. xoxo

I grew up on the same apple farm that Uncle Art grew up on. He was tall and strong like all the Mathies boys; a pre-requisite for picking apples.  Art's capabilities were legendary; he could hold five apples in each hand - ten all together! His card playing and storytelling were well-known. His presence was everywhere. I remember seeing his name carved into the stairs of the old barn. Whenever he returned to the farm he told stories of his travels and adventures. Years later when I returned home from university and Uncle Art was visiting he would test my knowledge and ask me if I knew anything. I looked up to him because he had a successful career and I found his work intriguing. He smoked special cigars and drank special whiskey. He lived the high life that I could only imagine growing up on the farm. He was my role model and years later I realized he had a lot of influence over the choices and decisions I made. He was an inspiration to me and I will be always be deeply grateful.

As a child growing up in a big family, having Uncle Art come to visit was always a fabulous time. He would tell jokes, show us card tricks or a new game and, on occasion, he would even sing a song. I would ask time and time again for him to recite the poem about Rindercella who lived with her Mugly Other & her two Sad Blisters. We would just laugh and laugh. 

As I got older, it was a thrill to stay up with the "adults" and play cards into the wee hours of the night. Uncle Art was always the last one at the table. "Just one more hand", I would hear him say as I left to go to bed (sometimes at 2am). Leaving the following day, his departure was similar to his arrival, with a hearty laugh and a great big hug. 

Once I was married & had children of my own, Art made it a point to get to know them too. He used to play a matching game with my son, Jonah. The game was appropriately called "Arthur" (after a children's TV show). Art always took the time to visit with each of them and ask questions about how everything was going. He would talk to the kids as if they were his own. 

Art was my mom's baby brother but to me he was a giant of a man who always had a card up his sleeve and a twinkle in his eye.

A Tribute to a dear friend





	I'm going to dearly miss my old friend Art. It was quite a shock to hear about his sudden passing.



	We have known each other for over fifty years and throughout that time we have always had each other's back.



	I first met my old friend when we were hardly out of our teens. At the time we were both working for CN railway in Montreal and for some reason we immediately became good friends. I being the eldest of 6 siblings always looked up to Art as the big brother I never had.



	Throughout the years we remained good buddies even though for a good part of that time we lived many miles apart.



	We lived in fairly close proximity however, for a period of 2 years out west in B.C., he and Marg in Vancouver and Fran and I in Victoria. We looked forward to the ferry ride when we visited each other on a regular basis.



	We moved back from B.C. around the same time, he and Marg to Toronto and Fran and I to Ottawa.



	The four of us remained close throughout that time and looked forward to the commute when it came time to visit.



	 Watching their son Tommy, my namesake, during that time grow up into the fine young man that he has become is part of the memory that I will always cherish.



	I'm not sure how I will handle his not being around anymore as I'm still reeling in shock at his passing.



	As a matter of fact I am quite perturbed at the fact that he did that without any warning, which by the way I will let him know when I see him again, as I'm pretty sure we will end up in the same place where ever that may be.



	Anyway dear friend that's all I have to say for now and I'm sure that you still have my back.

We will miss Art. HIs voice, humour, positive attitude, love for family and friends, his stories, Slop her dripper was so funny. He did it so well. Art and Marg- such a wonderful couple and great hosts.
