Don, Bob and I would often meet on Canoe Lake for a visit while we were in Algonquin. We all had a mutual love of Algonquin Park. We always enjoyed Don's stories, especially the episodes involving opening up the Hermitage for spring! He was always passionate about his latest project, be it writing or carving a new bird. We loved to share all the latest happenings in the Park. He'll be missed and Canoe Lake and Algonquin Park will not be the same without him. Our condolences to his family.

Don and I shared so many memories, starting when we guided together at Taylor Statten Camp Wapomeo in 1957. During the following 56 years, I visited him at his Hermitage, where we recalled every guide, counsellor, and camper name we could remember. All of us who worked with and knew him admired his leadership in Algonquin, for his commitment and energies were always foremost for the benefit of others and the heritage of the Park. An avid naturalist, artist, sculptor, author, and master canoeist, he served as a mentor to so many. We thank you, Don, for your heart and soul that live on within all who knew Algonquin through your passion and in your step. WE WILL MEET AGAIN AT THE END OF THE PORTAGE. Alan Frosst

Don was a great neighbour, I remember him waving to me first thing in the morning from his office desk in the basement where he would be hard at work on another book. What I'll miss most about him was his famous Open House punch. Here's to you Don!

It is with sadness that I heard the news of Don's passing.  Don was a friend, and a long-time member of the Algonquin Park Local Citizens Committee.  Don was an original member of the LCC, and was strongly dedicated to Algonquin Park, and to sustainable forest management within the park. Don always believed in multiple use in Algonquin, and he recognized that the park is a jewel that should be enjoyed by many.  Don enjoyed more sides of Algonquin Park than most will ever get to, but he also gave much back in return.  Don, you will be missed by your friends at the Algonquin Forestry Authority.

Sharon and family. My sincere condolences. I only met your father once. He seemed like such a nice man, and he certainly knew how to wear a kilt. I wish we had been able to get to know him more.

I know Don will be remembered by his many friends from Canoe Lake. His vast knowledge and perspectives were invaluable. Thank you for his dedication providing completeness to the whole Algonquin Community. Your memories will be rekindled fireside and not forgotten. Rest now forever knowing you lived a very worthwhile life.

Don and I met several times over the years when out birding in the Toronto area. We had many great discussions about canoe tripping, forestry practices and the history of Algonquin Park. I will miss our encounters in the field.

Truly a sincere gentle soul.
Mike & I (Pat), used to love when we would see Don walking down our street, lately with 2 walking sticks, but still making sure he got a breath of that fresh air. We would stop & chat which was always a pleasure to do with both Don & Joyce.
Having lived on Gwendolen Avenue for many years, along side the Lloyd's we would find ourselves doing this every so often.
One of our proudest moments was when Don presented Mike with a copy of his book Canoeing Algonquin Park, which has been read by many of our Family. We too being campers, canoeists & outdoor people.
We will miss his soft, deep voice telling stories of his adventures.

Dear Mrs. Lloyd and family, I had the distinct pleasure to sit on the LCC for Algonquin Park for about 20 years with this fine man. Don had a practical yet serious commitment to his love of Algonquin Park. He was a inspiration on his passion to keep the Park perfect with the common sense and respect for others opinions. Don always added the flare to keep a spark of humor in our meetings and in any conversations we had following the formal parts of our activities. Thank you for sharing you husband, dad and grandpa with the rest of us.

Joyce, I was so very sorry to learn of your husband's passing from my good friend (your nephew) Paul Richardson. Paul's words, like those in the obituary posted here, indicate that he was a very special person who contributed hugely to many lives both within the family and through his multi-faceted career. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers as you mourn his loss - but also celebrate a life well-lived and his contributions to Canadian society in so many varied ways.

I sat on the LCC of the AFA with Don for a few years.  His love for Algonquin Park was obvious and he challenged anyone that had any plans to take away from the enjoyment of the park.
He always asked about me when talking to my daughter Cathy Foxcroft at the Owl Foundation.  I spoke to him a few weeks ago when he was unwell and he made light of his "beaver fever".  He was a gentleman and a gentle man!

Dear Joyce and family: I am so sorry of the passing of Don, my colleague at Sir Sandford Fleming, and in retirement a true friend .... Joyce, Don and I, plus others also enjoyed dinners and theatre together. I will miss you dear friend ... God Bless you Joyce and to your family.

I will miss the wonderfull gormet dinners, Don put on at the lake, with conversations ranging from fishing, baseball and of course always Algonquin. I don't think I ever left without some kind of new knowledge. I will miss Don.

Dear Gwen and family. Dr. Lloyd was probably the best teacher at Fleming. Everyone I know liked him, because he enjoyed teaching  students. He could relate to anyone on every level. Students in his classes enjoyed his discussions, and liked his field trips, because he made them enjoyable, and interesting. He would talk about many Interesting stories, from personable experiences. He made Geography so interesting, students really felt involved. I had the highest respect for him, as he made learning fun. He was so well liked. He will be missed; however, there's not a day that goes by without thinking about thoses Q cards, Buster Keaton, soil, not dirt, thoses dangling eye glasses, and many more thoughts. Steven

Please accept my deepest sympathy for Don's passing. After knowing him as a friend and colleague in North York from the '60's through the '80's when we both retired, I lost touch until I read about him a few years ago in Roy MacGregor's NORTHERN LIGHT, the story of Tom Thomson's mysterious death and burial in Algonquin Park. MacGregor, himself no stranger to the Park,
writes admiringly of Don as he is guided from Canoe Lake to various relevant landmarks, including the supposed location of Thomson`s grave.
It was a great pleasure for me to read of Don`s more than 60 years of canoe tripping in Algonquin. I wish now I had re-contacted him. I`m so sorry he is gone. I will miss his spirit.

Over the last 25 years I have been fortunate to know Don as a friend, mentor and canoe tripping partner (extraordinaire). He has always been my closest connection to Canoe Lake; a place we both call home. I will miss Don more than words can say. There are so many stories to share.

My sympathies to you at this most difficult time. You should take comfort in knowing that he affected so many students over the years in such positive ways. He was such a great Geography teacher in Grade 9 that I went back into that corner room again to take Physical Geography in a later year. Stuff I learned from him I still remember to this day. 
My fondest memory of him as a teacher was his wish that we all use proper grammar on our papers. His example of poor grammar that we shouldn't use was his favorite and I will always remember it. He used to tell the class not to use such sentences as, "it's further to Cleveland than by bus." it honestly cracks me up every time I hear his voice from nearly 30 years ago in my head saying that.

I went to Sir Sanford Fleming from 1976 - 1980. Although I did not know him well I do remember him. His name was always mentioned as one of the finest teachers in the school. Condolences to the family on your loss.

Dear Joyce and Family, My heartfelt condolences on Don's passing. As we all know, he was an inspirational teacher and so many memories come alive for former students, friends and especially his devoted family. Again, my condolences to you all and wish you strength.

Dear Gwen and family. Dr. Lloyd was my favorite teacher at Sir Sandford Fleming back in the late 70's & early 80's. I spent many hours after school discussing many topics about everything, that's when the learning took place. He was so inspirational, and related to students on every level . Cue cards, newspaper clippings, films and Buster Keaton were his favorites. Algonquin Park was his favorite . When I was at the visitor's Centre , I bought up every single game of Algonquin Voyager, and his books at the centre. If it had his name on it, I bought it. He was very respectful about religion, and enjoyed teaching at Fleming. He will be sadly missed. He was more like a friend, or a parent at school. He only was upset if you said the word "Dirt", and not soil; because it contains humus, and other mineral components . Steven.
