Doris went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday July 7, 2022 at the age of 102. She was predeceased by her beloved husband James (2017). Loving mother of Elaine (Richard) Maxwell, Marion (late Glen) Ferris, and Nancy (Philip) Jackson. Cherished Grandmother of Heather, Karyn (Lorenzo), Andrew (Katie), Elizabeth (Late Jim), Rachel (Michael), Jonathan, Lydia (Kyle), Sandra, Lisa (Jason) and Kevin. She was blessed to have 16 Great Grandchildren. Remembered by sister Ruth Pickering (Kenneth) and predeceased by her 8 siblings.
Doris was born May 20, 1920 in Regina, Saskatchewan to Gustav and Lydia Gustafson who had immigrated from Sweden. Her first language was Swedish. She was the 3rd child out of 10 and as the oldest girl, many duties were assigned to her which also meant she was obligated to leave school at the end of grade 8.
When WW11 began, she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a cook. This is where she met and married James at Yorkton, Saskatchewan in 1944. After the war, they moved to Toronto where together, they built their own home on an acre of land. They had daughters Elaine, Marion and Nancy.
In 1957, they bought property in Collingwood on the shores of Georgian Bay. Everyone took part in clearing the land and building the cottage.
The family joined the small congregation called Victory Gospel Church on Sheppard Ave. Doris was interested in helping the many missionaries that the Church supported. She made quilts for them. And even bought and dressed 15 little dolls that she sent off to an orphanage in Nigeria. Missionaries were often at the house for dinner when they were on furlough.
In 1970, Victory Church closed and Jim and Doris started attending Banfield Memorial Church (now Wellspring Church).
Doris enjoyed curling, crafts and cooking. Traveling was also important. Throughout their marriage they travelled to about 40 countries, all 50 states and 10 provinces.
Family was most important and she was always happy to have everyone around. Jim and Doris were married 72 years before Jim passed away in 2017. Doris lived at Chartwell Lansing Retirement Home from 2017 to 2022.
