May 7, 1911 - August 12, 2015
On a sunny day in Muskoka, Betty McKinney died peacefully at home at James Street Place, Bracebridge, Ontario at age 104. Born in Hamilton on May 7, 1911 to R. Roy Moodie and Florence E. Fearman. Predeceased by her brother Robert C. Moodie and son Richard R. Mills. Beloved wife of the late Edwin W. Mills and the late Robert E. (Mac) McKinney. Much loved mother of Edwin M. Mills ( Judith), and Julia E. Wilson (Bruce). Devoted stepmother to James I. McKinney (Joan). Loving "Gram" to 12 grandchildren and "G.G." to 29 great grandchildren. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews of the Moodie and Catto clans.
During her long life, Betty called many places home: Hamilton, Victoria, Wingham, Bracebridge, and Arizona but her heart was in Muskoka where she spent every summer of her 104 years. Her association with the Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club was nearly as long. Granddaughter of one of the 3 founding members, she became a ladies golf champion on several occasions and played the course for nearly 80 years. Many of the lilac and cork trees on the course were the gift of Betty and Edwin.
She was regularly sought out for her legendary memory. It was always a joy for her family and friends of all ages to be instantly recognized and their family history and accomplishments recalled. A staunch royalist, she delighted in comparisons with the Queen. Indeed she was "our Queen" and we shall miss her dearly.
Family and friends are invited to attend a "Celebration of Life" on Sunday, August 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club, Port Carling, Ontario.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital.
