Glen was an active and loving father to Michael (Wanda), Peter (Catherine) and Janet Bockner (Larry) whom he raised in Don Mills. Loving grandfather to Elijah (Kalie), Stephanie Milton (John), Leena Wood, Rachel Wood, and James and Emma Bockner. Great grandfather to
Aaron and Rebekah Rose Milton, and Thomas, Bentley and Joseph Wood. Glen was predeceased by his wife, Lois (nee Holmes) in 1995, his parents (below), his brother, Jack, his sister, Joyce Grottick, and sadly, his son, Peter Wood in 2016. His sense of humour and story telling will be missed by all.
Glen was born in Toronto and was raised in various cities in Ontario, as his father, Colonel Herbert Wood and his wife Hazel May Wood (nee Shepherd) were officers of the Salvation Army. From 1937 – 1945, the family was stationed in Cape Town, South Africa.
In the 1940s, a scout for the Toronto Argos watched Glen playing rugby at his Toronto high school. The scout selected Glen for try-outs and he participated in training but found his locker cleared out at the end of his second week there. He remained physically active his whole life.
Glen began teaching in 1954 in a two-room school house near Belleville, Ontario. From there, he moved to teach in Richmond Hill and finally, the North York Board of Education (now TDSB). He received his degrees from U. of T., and his extensive training in music there and with the Salvation Army prepared Glen well to be a professional musician, music teacher, consultant, and ultimately, the Coordinator of Music for the NYBE until his retirement in 1989. His happiest days were spent as head of music at Northview Heights S.S. He also loved his time with the Leaside United Church's Girls' Choir in the 1960s. Glen enjoyed speaking at music conferences and adjudicating music festivals in Canada and abroad. After retirement, Glen and Lois enjoyed their cottage near Picton, Ontario on Adolphus Reach where the winds were strong and the sailing was ideal.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation (no service) held from 2 – 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 25 at Kane - Jerrett Funeral Home @ 8088 Yonge St. north of Steeles near Royal Orchard Blvd. and south of Hwy. 7 and 407.
