Dear Laurie: We are truly sorry to hear of Ian's passing, but faith tells us he is has conquered death and is now living with our Lord. I was as shocked and saddened as everyone to hear that our old friend has gone. Ian was a wonderful colleague, leader and teacher, with a dry wit and sense of humour who always kept us ticking, if not at ease, in our daily travails at DND. It is with great sadness that I heard of Ian's passing. I had the pleasure of serving with him at DNDOI Toronto. I will remember him for his cheerful manner and his dedication and professionalism in serving the Canadian Forces.

I met Ian in 1986. We were both assigned Search & Rescue week for expo 86. We were to meet at the Rothman's tent beside the RCMP Musical Ride. I looked down the track and saw this guy striding towards me dressed for golf. He had a cell phone in one hand the size of a brick, in the other a huge day timer. This was the beginning of a great friendship. We worked and played hard doing all the Canada Pavilions in Western Canada. I would drive in advance in a large suburban and Ian would fly in. He would have enough bags to go on a long safari and I would have all my clothes rolled up like a big jelly roll so they wouldn't wrinkle. Ian was horrified. He would have a pant press, tie rack, folding hangers and a special shaving system, and was always three hours ahead of me. He traveled like a Victorian gentleman. To keep up with him I had all the pressed seams sewn in my informs. Ian loved the Navy and his country and would always toast the Queen! Ian liked to maintain a high RMC standard and expected the same from you. He was always the diplomat and was very kind and generous. You had to be careful with Ian, if you admired any of his possessions a courier would arrive at your door a week later with that particular item or something very close. I recently received a large photo of Ian and I in our No.1 uniforms as a memento of the good old days. I know he is in Heaven arranging God's Mansions and when my time comes and I come before the two doorman's Peter and Paul he will whisper in their ears "HE'S OKAY!" "LET HIM IN!" There is alot of work to do....We are all part of each other and Ian sits quietly in our hearts making sure we do things the right way. Ian was an Officer and a Gentleman and was well respected and loved on the West Coast. It has been a great pleasure to have known Ian and have him be a part of our lives. He was always living life with optimism and was gifted with a warm and infectious smile. He had a strong and gentle spirit - and great taste in neckties:) He had a winning spirit thru to his last days. To have known him was to love him and the things that he stood for. I have struggled for the right words to say. Laurie and family, my deepest condolences. I was shocked and deeply saddened by Ian's passing, as I'm sure many others were. The last time I saw Ian was last summer - with you Laurie - an impromptu visit on your way to dinner with your niece. It ended with a hug, and I feel so fortunate for that. My husband, John, and I first met Ian in 1989 because of business. Throughout the years we had the opportunity to get to know Ian and Laurie on a personal level and have always enjoyed their company thoroughly. Ian was a gentleman, though could carry off any joke because of that twinkle in his eye. I will never forget Ian's extraordinary kindness, generosity and sense of professionalism. He will be missed on so many levels. I have always had the highest regards for Ian and always will.

Shelley and I were saddened to hear of the passing of our true friend Ian. Our love and prayers are with Laurie at this time. Ian represented the true essence of a man�s man, courageous, passionate, courteous, focused in business, dedicated to Laurie and loyal to family, friends, and country. We remember Ian as humble, happy and a strong man of God, always ready with a quick wit and a kind word, willing to sacrifice for the good of others. It was with great sadness that I heard of the passing of Ian. He was one of kind! His positive attitude and happy outlook on life touched everyone with whom he had contact. Always with a smile on his face, Ian embraced all the challenges that life had to offer and always, always found the upside. Your presence has and will continue to be missed here at the office.

Ian Thomson was a gentle man who could be very tenacious when pursuing one of his many goals. He was an early supporter of J&A Media Services, a media monitoring firm established with my partner, Julie Young, and I. In 1989, when J&A was still a baby, barely 6 months old, the Snowbirds had a terrible crash at the CNE. Since it was the labour day weekend, DND's regular service was unable to help track the media. So Ian called us. On the following Monday, Ian did an Interview with Canada AM and was anxious to see how it turned out. Imagine our shock and surprise when Lt. Cmndr Ian Thomson, in full dress, pulls in front of our small rented bungalow in a limousine to watch the Canada Am coverage. We certainly weren't expecting visitors! But in spite of or maybe because of the sad events of the previous weekend and the pressure of keeping up with the myriad media requests, Ian was gracious and humble to the core. A consummate professional, he will be dearly missed.

Though I have known Ian for just a short period of time.it was clear that this was a man who 'made a difference',not only in the lives of those closest to him,but in the lives of all who had the good fortune to enter his life.Quick to offer a helping hand,a warm smile and a word of encouragement,his presence will be missed.His spirit,however, will continue in all of those he touched. To Laurie....My prayer is that God will help you through this difficult time and give you the strength to go forward, with the comfort and knowledge that Ian's life was 'Well and Truly Lived'.
