OBITUARY
Joaqim D'Mello
November 16, 1933 – January 9, 2021
Joaquim D’Mello, the youngest of five children, was born to Alexander and Beatrice (nee Nazareth) D’Mello, on November 16th, 1933. Raised in a deeply devoted Roman Catholic family, he joined the Altar Boys Society of St. Patrick’s Parish at an early age, where he made several lifelong friendships. He was a bright student and completed his schooling at St. Patrick’s High School, after which he got his B. Com degree and went into banking where he discovered his professional passion.
A studious man, Joaquim excelled in all the multiple banking exams he took over the years, ultimately becoming distinguished as a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers, London, England.
Joaquim met and married Joyce Rodgers on June 3rd, 1956, and together they raised four wonderful children: James, Jennifer, Jeanne, and Jessica. Joaquim (Jock as he was known amongst family & friends) and Joyce were a popular couple, well known in the community for organizing fun-filled parties and picnics to Clifton, Sandspit and Hawkes Bay beaches.
Sadly, Joyce passed away on January 4, 1997, with the family by her side.
Joaquim retired as a Professor of Banking Law and International Trade, and as Senior Vice-President of a major bank. He was a prolific author; his articles were published in numerous international banking journals and publications and even banking textbooks. He was sought internationally for his expertise in International Banking Law and Practice. Not only was he a self-taught man, but over and beyond the 5 decades of his banking career he mentored hundreds of banking students and took the time to coach many of his friends who were in the same profession.
He immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1998 and settled into retirement life, close to his children, grandchildren, and extended family of nieces and nephews. As a well-traveled man, he had many wonderful stories to tell, seasoned with his original sense of wit and humour - keeping everyone around him entertained.
Joaquim’s retirement life included so many interests. He promptly became an active member of the Good Shepherd Parish community, joining the Choir and the Prayer group. He was a member of the Thornhill Seniors Community, as well as the Can Orient Seniors Club. He had a highly active social life, meeting regularly with many of his old school friends, and relatives all over Canada, Europe, and the U.S.
In the words of all who knew him, Joaquim was a selfless, humble, gentle, kind, and generous soul. He was an upright gentleman who, throughout his career, was well known for his moral fibre rooted in his deep spirituality. He always had a kind word, paired with a smile, for everyone of every age.
May his soul Rest in Peace. Amen.
Joaquim will be deeply missed by children and grandchildren:
James D’Mello
Jennifer & Thomas Menezes
Jeanne, Victor, Sapphire & Emerald Misquitta
Jessica DeMello, Andrew & Vanessa Alphons
his brother-in-law Clarence (& Cheryl) Rodgers, as well as his cousins, Godchildren, nieces, nephews and countless relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, the family would appreciate donations to either the Alzheimer’s Society or the Cummer Lodge Volunteer Program (at the Home where Joaquim was a resident for the past 4 years, and the recipient of wonderful care)

I am truly blessed that Joaquim will always be a precious part of my life. He was my first boss when I started my career at BCCI in 1984. I lost my father in 1981 who had similar qualities to Joaquim. God works in mysterious ways, and little did I then know that Joaquim would become like a father figure to me. He treated me like a daughter and I realized that I had gained a friend for life. He was a very soft spoken, humble, disciplined, genuine, well respected and generous man. Over the 8 years that I worked under his guardianship I had gained work as well as life learning skills. I became close to the family and was treated as one of their own. I was glad Joaquim visited my family in Vancouver and we made special memories, the ones to last a lifetime. I will miss him tremendously but he will be in our hearts forever. May his soul R.I.P.
Sincerely,

Uncle Joaqim was a kind hearted and thoughtful person. I remember when I and my friends went for sleep over to his home, for Jennifer's wedding, he took out time from his busy schedule and spent quality time with us. Late Aunty Joyce fed us delicious food and made sure that we were comfortable. It was one of my best times of life. I cherish the time we spent together.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Mr. D'Mello was my first boss at the BCCI Training facility in Clifton Karachi. I will always remember his smile as he greeted me each morning when he walked into his office. He was kind, considerate, humble and a person who was respected by all who worked under him, as well as the many students that he trained. I was blessed to learn many things from him.

My Dear James, Jennifer, Jessica, Vanessa and Andrew,
Mr. D’Mello was my teacher and mentor at MCB Bank Ltd training & development Centre, where I joined as a trainee officer in 1974. Later we became work colleagues in 1995, he was heading the training dept for the second term and I was head of the human resources. I have 45 years of fond memories. I was always fascinated and motivated with his hard work and dedication. His humility and wisdom have helped me in my accomplishments. Mr. D’Mello touched many people’s lives and mentored many bankers in Pakistan with his expertise.
I will never forget my training days when we used to go for long walks from Clifton training center to the city center (metropole hotel) while having valuable discussions on various topics of mutual interest. He was an authority on Banking Laws and practices. His contribution to the quarterly banking journal was unprecedented. His active participation at the Institute of bankers in Pakistan was appreciated on all levels.
When I moved to Canada, our family ties strengthened even more. I still remember his welcome dinner in Mississauga. He shared valuable tips to settle in this new land. I would always cherish his valuable advices. Me and my wife are thankful to be part of his family celebrations. I will always remember his platinum birthday and his grand 80th birthday, where all his family and friends came together . The Smile on his face was priceless.
It was my honor that he and Jessica were always part of my family events. I am very grateful for his love and affection that he gave me his valued collection of books and journals in his last period. He was a student of life, never stopped learning. he was fond of reading and social gatherings. He was an inspiration to us all.
He was man of countless positive traits. I offer my deep condolences to the family on behalf of my family. He will be greatly missed. He will continue to live in our hearts.
May his Soul Rest in Peace.

Mr. D'Mello was my mentor and a teacher at the BCCI Regional Training and Development Axademy in Karachi where we graduated as Graduate Trainee Officers in 1987. He was am amazing teacher and whatever I have accomplished in Banking in the early years of my professional career is by virtue of his training both in qualitative and quantitative terms. He had produced so many good bankers in Pakistan who are serving in senior positions in Pakistan and abroad. He was an iconic figure in the banking industry. His legacy will continue for a very long time. May God rest his soul in peace and-amen.

I first met him in July 1987 at BCCI Regional Training Academy Karachi. He was a gem and knowledgeable teacher with full command over his subject International Trade. Each article of UCP 400 at that time was memorized by him. He was a polite spoken and always well dressed gentleman. His command over banking law and practice was commendable. He produced finest bankers at BCCI

My dear Jimmy, Jennifer, Jeanne and Jessica,
To you and your families, Erik and I send our deep sympathies on the sad passing away of your loving dad - my uncle.
When we were young, to my eldest brother Ernest (later known as Gerry) and me, Uncle Joaquim was like one of our siblings. He was just a few years older than Ernest. We probably got on his nerves often because he was low key and quiet. Unlike us. He never retaliated to our teasing - which was often. If I happened to be over at their house and saw my granny stirring his tea, I didn't give him peace. I never had the pleasure of getting a retort from him. But my granny would berate me in Konkani, which I didn't understand but I could read her facial expressions. As we grew older and our teasing ceased, I realized he was a gentle and caring person. In my treasure box of memories will be the couple of times that he took me as a teenager, to a special restaurant for my birthday. And never to be forgotten was the first time I paid a visit to Karachi from the States. U.J. spent almost an entire day driving me to friends' places to say a quick "hello". I was so appreciative of his caring. There was no way I could have visited so many friends in so short a time, all on my own. Many years later when he had settled in Canada, he came and visited us in the San Francisco area. The first time was on a tourist's visit. That time I had him sing two songs in our house. He had a beautiful voice. I remembered that my mum used to ask him to sing when he visited us in Karachi. The second time he came to the SF area was for Erik and my Golden Wedding Anniversary. I was happy that he came with Jessica. It was a memorable occasion and to me he represented my parents who were no longer with us. It was really a very special time. He had the honor of leading us in the Grace before Meals. Fond memories of a special person. May Uncle Joaquim enjoy Eternal Peace. Love, Marie

It was the spring of 1981. I joined the trainee batch at BCCI Clifton Training Centre, and we were all excited. At sharp 9 am, in walked a man with an air of indescribable confidence. We already knew he was the head of the Academy. Soon we realized he’s an extraordinarily learned and experienced man. It was Mr J. S. D’Mello.
He was always willing to share his knowledge and experience, a very down to earth person. He wrote and published many articles on various banking topics. He was an institution.
I didn’t know at the time that at the end of this training, my association with Mr D'Mello will become deeper and longer. Few months after the training I was asked if I would be interested to join him as part of his team at the Academy. I gladly accepted it, and thus started my second journey with him.
For the next several years, I worked closely with him and got to know him better, and also met the rest of his wonderful family. He was a man of impeccable values who firmly believed in the system of merit. He was always willing to help in whatever way he could. He had a heart of gold.
We will forever cherish his memories.

Sir D' Mello taught us Foreign Trade and Practice and law of banking in 1995 at MCB Staff College, Karachi, Pakistan. He was a great human being and a passionate banker. I still remember that after completion of my training at MCB staff college he encouraged me to start delivering lectures to new batch of probationary officers. I feel proud in saying that Jessica was in 31st batch when I delivered few lectures at MCB staff college. May his soul rest in peace. We will never forget you Sir D' Mello.

Uncle Joe, as we knew him, was a man of immense knowledge and modesty, a rare combination when you look around you today.
Just two short anecdotes: I borrowed a batch of the Economist magazines as I had wanted to check on further education that was advertised there. Soon, I was enrolled with the University of Hull and two years later, graduated with an MBA.
Later, I had a chance to work in L&D and asked his advice. Of course, he said yes. Today I am a professor...

I am from the 6th batch of BCCI graduate trainee program. Mr D’mello taught us law and it was our batch which sent a strong recommendation to the management to onboard him as a full time faculty member. Mr D’Mello was offered the role of the director of the academy (cannot remember what that designation was called), which he accepted.
