Joe Grinton was a tremendously loved and loving man who could tell a mean Dad Joke and, back in the day, sang just like Bing Crosby.
Like so many of his generation, he worked for only one company, the CPR, He never cared for the work but had 3 sons to raise and with his wife of 51 years, Helen, they grew strong and healthy, with a set of values congruent with Joe’s sense of caring, work ethic, and bad sense of humour.
He was born in Chapleau, a small town in northern Ontario. Joe’s Dad, Robert (aka Scottie) along with his Mom, Luella, (first name Martha) shepherded their seven kids through the northern railroad towns of Ontario. These towns would flavour Joe’s outlook on life forever. North Bay became a favourite for Joe and the family.
For many years, North Bay was the vacation destination for the family where they stayed with Joe’s mom. It was on these visits to Gram’s that Joe taught the boys to golf, fish, and play cards. Gram’s raisin cookies were the best, but Joe would argue this point here and now.
Joe retired from the CPR at the age of 52 due to his eyesight. He took up volunteering for the Richmond Hill Foodbank which he dearly loved. Joe was a service guy at heart and this avocation of more than 25 years was, perhaps, where he was meant to work all along.
The boys grew up and married. Two of them married again. And boy did the grandchildren and great grand children roll in. Scottie and Helene provided 3 grandkids and 4 great grandkids. Bruce and Liz provided 2 grandkids. Gary and Judy are the really productive ones providing 6 grandkids and 8 great grandkids. Joe cared about all of them very deeply.
Joe provided heart and had a smile for all those around him and if you needed help, he provided it.
A visitation for Joseph will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kane-Jerrett Funeral Homes, 8088 Yonge Street, Thornhill, ON L4J1W3. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, June 26, 2024 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at Kane-Jerrett Funeral Homes.
