With Uncle Labeeb reaching 91 years of age, the news of his passing away was only a matter of time. Still, that news was the saddest and hardest for me to take, particularly coming so relatively soon after my own father's passing away, Labeeb's younger brother. The two were inseparable, especially that our two families had lived in a single two-story house in Shefa-Amr. Ammo Labeeb was like a second father to me. I still remember the house, the beautiful gardens both of them had planted, the VW station wagon, the Peugeot 404, the clothes shop he ran, the biggest and most successful of its kind in the area, even the old small shop he inherited from my grandfather Saleem (Abo Fuad). These are of course "physical material" things. More importantly, I remember his amazing smile, his kindness, his calm nature, his sense of humour, his strong will, and his unwavering honesty. I also remember his intelligence, and how smart my late father used to say Ammo Labeeb was. Ammo Labeeb's was among the smartest students in all of Palestine. I feel privileged that I have inherited traits similar to Ammo Labeeb's. In fact, and to close, my late father used to marvel how much closer in behaviour and traits I was to Ammo Labeeb than to him. And I used to answer jokingly that likely my uncle and I were closer to Sido Saleem than he was. I will greatly miss you, Ammo Labeeb. May your soul rest in peace ... from Khalid, Jumana and little Naji!

Labib Farah was much loved by all who knew him. His departure is a loss of that generation of Palestinians who suffered the 1948 Nakba and the occupation of the homeland of Palestine. With hope, determination and love of life he continued snd strived to maintain a fulfilling life for his family full of joy and love.

“Did they find any blood?” Asked uncle Labeeb when I came back from a blood test; then he laughed out loud. Being ‘light blooded’ in Arabic is an expression for someone with a sense of humour, and uncle Labeeb was saying something to comfort a worried girl while expressing his love and opinion of her. That was the fast witted uncle Labeeb. 

Uncle Labeeb is married to my mother’s sister, aunt Nadia, who in fact was my second mother. He was more than an uncle. There was something steady about him, you could find him in his business, driving his car, at a dinner party, during war, migrating, in a small village or in Toronto- and no circumstances changed him! He had a firm presence, collected, calm, fast thinking and always kind. It felt that others were matching through life but Labeeb was flying.

Last time I saw uncle Labeeb was a few years ago surrounded by his grandchildren and looking exactly as he did when he was in his thirties surrounded by a younger generation. He joked about his health and tapped the table with his right hand saying: هيك، شو نعمل. Accepting life as it comes. With love.

I will carry Ammo Labeeb forever in my memory of Palestine, in the throbbing and flourishing heritage of our roots. I will carry him as a crucial part of our collective and my personal identity of who I am and who we are. His existence, now memory, is a correction to the brutal history of Palestine, a reminder that we are an intelligent, loving, funny, compassionate, hard working and wonderful people.

A day before ammo Labeeb passed away, we just happened to be in Shefa-amer to see khalo Hani and his daughter Muna. Before entering their house, my mom (Samia) took us (my Dutch wife, our 2 kids, myself, and the daughter of Umayya, my sister) to see the nearby old house of the families of Labeeb and Nadia (and Naji and Mimi). I do not know how many years passed without seeing the building for the last time, which is a school by now. We relived the memories of when we used to visit aunt Nadia and ammo Labeeb, we indicated to the kids where the Peugeot 404 used to park, etc etc.. Then when we visited khalo Hani, Muna said let’s get some knafi. So we drove in her car to the “knafi-store” and guess what? It was the same old store of Labeeb where he used to work more than 40 years ago.. I could see him inspecting the textile and advising his clients.. The next day we heard that ammo Labeeb passed away. Rare coincidence..

I probably saw him in 1992 for the last time but what comes to mind when I think about him is his very distinctive laugh, his sense of humor, his kindness, and humanity. Our condolences to you aunty Nadia, Jumana, Maha, Amal, Salim and their families..

With much Love and deep sorrow Afaf, myself, Emil, Summer, offer our condolences to aunty Nadia, Jumanam, Maha, Amal, Salim and their families for the departure of our beloved uncle Labeeb. We also offer our condolences to uncle Faud, aunty Leila and my mother Bahiya, for the loss of a brother whom they shared with, beautiful memories for their entire life.
Uncle Labeeb was a beautiful man. As I reflect back, I believe that he was the epitome of goodness and friendliness. In his company, you feel genuine love and at peace.
I was told he was sent to Jerusalem for his high school education and that he was a distinguished student. He was destined to pursue his higher education in the best universities. However, this was not meant to happen due to the events of Al Nakba that turned his life and the life of all Palestinians upside down.
As a young boy, I remember how he used to play the church organ on occasions such as Palm Sunday, Easter. As the service ended and the priest marshaled to exit the church and the congregation followed, I sneaked back to the church from the other door and stood by him while he was playing the last tunes. When he finished, he delved into his pocket and gave me “boostrenie”.
When I grew up and joined high school in Haifa, often I needed help with my homework. My sister Maha and I used to go to uncle Naji to seek help, who became later an educator par excellence to many generations to come. Once, I wanted help in a problem in Physics. Naji referred me to Labeeb who was able to show me the way.
The last time I met him it was at uncle Naji’s funeral. He approached me closely and told me with bitterness but with firmness that injustices committed in Palestine over decades will be redressed. He added “but not in my life”. May his wish come true.
Uncle Labeeb’s memory shines in the hearts of all those who know him.  Let us celebrate his life with joy and gladness for he lives in us, all. 

Labeeb was a very kind, pleasant and gentle soul, he also possessed an amazing inner strength.   His devotion to the Palestinian cause and his love to his wife, family and friends was unparalleled.  
Your beautiful smile ammo Labeeb will always be with us and will be missed.

برحيلك يا أبا سليم نفتقد رجلًا من خيرة الرجال. عرفناك إنسانًا مميزًا بعلمه، وخلقه، وطيب معشره. كنت دومًا مثالًا للأب العطوف، والزوج المحبّ، والجدّ الحنون. بشاشة وجهك كانت أجمل استقبال للأهل والأصدقاء. جلساتك الحلوة كانت غنيّة بالذكريات، وتعكس مشاعر وطنيّة أثقلتها مرارة الاغتراب. في حياتك كنت مثالًا لجيل لم يعرف سوى الكفاح لمواجهة تبعات الاغتراب . يعزّعلينا أن تتركنا، ولكنها تلك هي مشيئة الله. ستكون حاضرًا في قلوب أحبائك، وماثلًا في نجاحات أولادك وأحفادك، فلطالما كنت لهم القدوة ورسمت لهم طريق النجاح. نسأل الله تعالى أن يرحمك ويمنّ على ذويك بالصبر والسلوان.

Whenever you think of Labeeb and whenever you would see his quiet smile you could feel the warmth of understanding and sharing. You would always feel closeness. Labeeb will always be in our hearts.

We will miss him. May he have as much peace in his afterlife as he was able to find in this life.
