Margaret "Peggy" Electa Massey

Passed away peacefully at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital on November 10, 2023, in her 91st year. Peggy is survived by her daughter Lynne, son David, daughter-in-law Marilyn, and grandchildren Nicole and Connor. She was predeceased by her parents, Electa I. (Coultes) and Gordon M. Coates; and by her husband, Ronald C. Massey.

Peggy was born and raised in Dundas, Ontario. After high school, she was part of the first cohort of women to study business at the University of Western Ontario, graduating in 1955 with a first-class degree and a gold medal. She completed a teaching certification and moved to Toronto, where she taught business subjects at local high schools for several years.

She married Ron in 1960, and together they raised their two children in the Toronto area (North York and Thornhill). In 1983, Peggy and Ron moved to Bermuda, where Ron took up a new job and Peggy was soon immersed in an active mix of social activities and volunteer work.

Peggy was an engaged participant in whatever community she found herself in. She made friends easily, and she sought out opportunities to help with everything from selling event ribbons and sorting clothing donations to captaining her ladies’ golf group.

Throughout her life, Peggy enjoyed spending summers, weekends, and holidays at Stoney Lake, Ontario, with family and friends. She and Ron met at the lake in the late 1950s and established their own cottage there when they were engaged. After Ron retired, they divided their time between Stoney and Bermuda for several years, before moving back to Toronto in 2011.

Peggy enjoyed friends, family, golf, bridge, needlepoint, quilting, and a good sherry. She will be warmly missed for her bright, beautiful smile and her sweet sense of fun.

The family extends sincere thanks to the caring, cheerful team at Sunrise of Richmond Hill, where Peggy lived her last two years; and to the staff at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, who helped to ease her last two weeks.

Funeral: Thursday November 16, Kane-Jerrett Funeral Homes, 8088 Yonge Street, Thornhill, 11:00 a.m.

A celebration of life will follow the funeral at Thornhill Golf & Country Club, 7994 Yonge Street, Thornhill.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Mackenzie Health Foundation (Richmond Hill) would be appreciated.
