Mary passed peacefully, Friday April 7th, 2017 after a short illness, a month shy of her 87th birthday. Devoted mother to her three children, Mary Elizabeth (Nick Hewlin), Marian (Michael Beard) and David Jr. (Lisa Nissel). She was also a very proud Gran to Michael, Cody, Peter, Sarah and Katie, each of who feel blessed to have had her as their grandmother.
Mary was born in Saint John, NB on May 3, 1930 to John (Jack) and Marian Nutter.
The middle of three children, the family moved several times before settling in Toronto. Mary attended the Whitney School and retained friends made there for her entire life. She also attended Bishop Strachan School and it was in the chapel there on Nov 1, 1952 that she married her husband, David Butler White Sr.
Mary devoted her life to her family. She was an amazing wife and mother who put the needs of others ahead of her own. Bowling was an interest of David and Mary’s, which they enjoyed at the Granite Club for a number of years. Mary was known to bowl a strike, and then, as was her way, apologize to the other team!
Mary and David raised their family in Toronto, spending time at their cottage on Lake Rousseau and later Midland Point with their many friends.
After David’s passing in 2005, Mary continued on, a gracious hostess and kind to all who had the fortune to meet her.
Even after losing her brother, Barclay Nutter and sister Barbara Milne within months of each other, as well as facing a serious illness of her own, Mary’s strength became evident as she recovered and started a new chapter of her life at Revera Bradgate. She was a gracious lady who always had time for everyone. She took up some new pursuits in the last few years including painting, for which she showed great aptitude. She leaves behind her sister-in-law, Ann Nutter, and her nieces and nephews who she loved spending time with and who mourn her passing.
She will be missed by the wonderful staff at Bradgate who took such good care of her.
While her passing brings us great sorrow, we also have immense joy and pride to say she was our mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The World Wildlife Federation, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Scott Mission would be most appreciated.
A celebration of her Mary's life will be held on Monday May 1, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 at Revera Bradgate, 54 Foxbar Road, Toronto, 5th floor.
