
Paul passed away peacefully at age 87 on November 22, 2011 at the Sunnybrook Veterans Wing after a long struggle with Parkinson. Dad was born on the family homestead in Nokomis Saskatchewan in 1924 to Alexander & Anastasia Shalapata. Pre-deceased by Mary, his loving wife of 57 years, son Clarke and granddaughter Amanda as well as brothers Joe, Mike, Roy, Steve and sisters Julie and Tilly. Dad will be greatly missed by his children Paula (Bryon) Curt (Sheila), Sandra, Ian (Ilene) and Neil as well as his grand children Jeremy (Jackie), Beth (Henry), Siobhan (John), Alex, Paul, and his great grand children Mary Beth, Abby, Maddy, Clark, Hudson and MacLean. He is survived by his sisters Maria, Irene, Anne and Pat as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dad joined the Canadian Army in May 1943, first with the Regina Rifles than as part of a reinforcement draft to the Canadian Scottish Regiment in Belgium in October of 1944. Dad served with the Canadian Provo Corp as part of the Allied Occupation Force in Germany until his discharge in August of 1946. Dad had a 42 year career in a job he loved with the Metrological Services of the federal Ministry of Transportation and then the Ministry of the Environment. While posted to the Yukon in the 1950s he also found time to serve as a Justice of the Peace and Coroner for the territory. He also served as a Sergeant in the Army Reserves (Militia) from 1962 to 1967 with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, 18th Field Artillery and the 48th Highlanders of Canada. Dad enjoyed many pass times over the years, including hunting and curling and had a passion for Opera, gardening and building from scratch anything from recycled materials. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Dr. Williams, nurses Julie, Jan, Delores and May of K2E for their care of Dad over the past two years. They would also like to thank Cousin Margret for the time she spent with Dad over many a lunch at Sunnybrook. A Memorial Visitation for friends and family will take place at the R. S. Kane Funeral Home 6150 Young Street North York, from 3 until 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2011. Cremation. In lieu of flowers the family would ask that a donation be made to Sunnybrook's McDermott House Canada palliative care unit at www.mcdermotthousecanada.org in Paul's name.
