What made Bob special was that he was very fatherly to everyone.  He didn't have to tell you he was your friend; you knew it anyway.  It was shortly before Christmas when my father died.  He and his wife invited me into their living quarters to see their display of memorabilia and the Christmas decorations on her piano.  It made me feel special to be invited there.  I always felt I could come to him if I needed someone. When I was recuperating from cancer and was very weak, he reunited me with a former Woodbridge resident who also was weakened by cancer.  Our e-mails took us out of the realm of having to be reclusive and gave us much merriment.  When I think of what was good about the village I grew up in, it was the Scotts.

Dear Brad and Jeff - My sincere condolences to both of you as well as your families. I had the privilege of talking to your dad on a few occasions when I was first starting my career as a funeral director. I will always remember him as a true professional who loved to share his experience, knowledge and a good story.

Dear Brad and Jeff, I just found out about your fathers passing, and I am truly saddened to hear the news. He was a legend and a true gentlemen. I remember as a young kid when I would be driving on the funerals with your dad, he would enthrall me with his stories of working on the ambulance. He was a great guy and one of the old school funeral directors that had a profound impact on me of what it meant to be professional, good humoured and have a knack for talking to people to make them feel they're the only person in the room. Like his father, Bob was a quiet hero who took the extra effort to enrich the lives of others. Though his staff looked after the arrangements when my father died, Bob took the time to be my friend. A cup of hot chocolate, and then he took me to visit with Jane to see their beautiful Christmas decorations and memorabilia. They gave me warmth when I was numb. A few months later, I wrote an article about Mrs. Kearney playing the church organ so we could hear it across the valley during Hurricane Hazel. Bob forwarded my article to her son Dudley in Florida, who later phoned me about how thrilled he was. When both Dudley and I were recuperating from cancer, Bob put us in touch. We were both weak. Dudley was getting two blood transfusions per week, and I found every breath painful due to blood clots in my lungs and heart. Due to our mutual trust in Bob’s judgment, we immediately became close friends. We could talk about everything, including growing up in Woodbridge. Most of all, we made each other laugh. We were confined pretty much to our abodes, so that e-mail link and the phone calls took away much of our loneliness. When he died, his daughter wrote to me about how much that friendship had meant. Bob had a special gift of being fatherly to everyone who needed him.

Dear Brad - I am sorry to hear of your father's death. I know I am not the only one with fond memories of him, but I would like to share one of them with you now. It was late on a Friday afternoon leading into a long weekend, and I visited him at the Funeral Home in Woodbridge. He was very gracious and gave me plenty of his time, but he also was very sensible, and said, "it is getting late on a Friday afternoon prior to a long weekend - where are you headed from here, and don't you want to get on the road soon??"......I told him I was headed home to Courtice, and he of course knew of Courtice - he then gave me very detailed instructions/directions to beat the potentially terrible traffic, sharing with me, in good humour, he knew "all the short cuts" from his days with the Ambulance Service. I followed his instruction/directions to the letter, and was home in under an hour....remarkable!! He will be missed by many, and will be remembered for his numerous contributions to Funeral Service in Canada.

Dear Jane and Family, Lea and I want to express our sincere sympathy. We were so sad to hear of Bob's death. He has always been part of my life. He was my first first aid instructor and he instilled a keen interest in me for first aid which I continue to teach in my retirement. When my father (Charles Douglas McLean) passed away Bob came to the rescue. Mom and Dad were not preplanners. Elise and I made last minute arrangements plus wrote a eulogy in a few days.
