He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Rong-Ling Suzan Jeng (鄭陳榕玲), children Linda (鄭友璉) and Haman (鄭友松) (wife Jessica 曹宜晶); and grandchildren Rachel Lew (劉瑞巧), Jillian Lew (劉傑玲), and Ethan Jeng (鄭傳健). He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Raymond Lew(劉偉文).
Shyau-Ren was born in Fuzhou City (福州巿) in the province of Fujian(福建省) on Nov. 5, 1933 (lunar calendar Sept. 18). He was the youngest of six children and survived the hardships of the Second Sino-Japanese War, including periods of famine and forced relocation by the occupying Japanese troops before retreating with his siblings to Taiwan. The loss of his parents by his early teens only fueled his independence. His drive pushed him to obtain his law degree for a professional career, and was working as a judge before making the decision to immigrate to Canada with his own young family in 1975. He was a strategic thinker with long term vision prioritizing family security. Canada offered a stable and secure environment to raise his two young children at the expense of his own professional path. He recognized that a career in law was not feasible in Canada given the language barrier and late start in his forties. Ever resourceful, Shyau-Ren prepared many skills in order to make the successful transition to a new country. In addition to learning English, he learned Fujian-style cooking, stamp carving, newspaper print setting, and even earned his electrical work certification. This broad set of skills paid off as he worked in the Maintenance Department of the Riverdale Hospital until his retirement in 1996. Shyau-Ren fully took advantage of his retirement years to travel the world exploring South America, Europe and Asia especially China many times to marvel at the cultural heritage and natural wonders.
A service to celebrate Shyau-Ren’s life will be held Saturday, March 22 at Kane-Jerrett Funeral Homes, 8088 Yonge Street, Thornhill, ON L4J1W3 at 1 p.m. followed by a burial at York Funeral Centre, 160 Beecroft Road, Toronto, ON just after 2 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to join together for a celebration meal at Congee Queen, 6464 Yonge St Unit 152, North York, ON M2M 3X4 at 3 p.m.
