August 1, 1925 – March 23, 2026.
Sophie Darmaga (nee Siwiec) passed peacefully at the young age of 100 years.
She is fondly remembered by many in the Dundas St. West/Ossington community, and later in the Royal York/Humbertown neighbourhood. Born August 1, 1925, in Pacanów, Swietokrzyskie, Poland, Sophie came to Canada as a young child. She was a spry, vibrant, and hard-working woman, with a drive and determination she received from her parents, Mieczyslaw Siwiec and Marianna Gronek, and she passed down to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
For over 40 years Sophie was an active partner at Metro Furniture on Dundas St. West, a business she ran with her loving husband of 61 years, the love of her life Edward (Ed) Darmaga, who predeceased her in 2006. When not at Metro Furniture, Ed and Sophie enjoyed their time with family and friends, trips to Florida, skiing in the Laurentians, and time at the family cottage. A gifted dress designer by trade, Sophie loved to sew, crochet, and knit. She was one of the original founders of The Jean Darlene Shop, a long-time children and ladies clothing store on Dundas St. West, which she opened in 1940 with her parents, later taken over by her younger sister Stella Bajac, who she is survived by, and her late sister in-law Ella Siwiec. Jean Darlene was next door to Metro Furniture, and just down the street from Dan Ray Shoes, run by her late brother Edward (Teddy) Siwiec.
Sophie and Ed had three beautiful daughters they were so proud of, and to whom she imparted her spirited nature, Marcia French who predeceased her in 1998, Janice Jackowski who predeceased her in 2017, and Nancy Langer, who warmly brought her into her home and took the best of care of Sophie for the last 6 years. A true testament to the reason Sophie was able to celebrate her 100th birthday with many loving family and friends. Sharp until the end, Sophie loved to garden, do puzzles, paint, roll cabbage rolls, read the newspaper, watch true crime documentaries, and listen to André Rieu in her spare time, all while sneaking food and cuddles to Heidi, her four-legged shadow.
She is sorely missed by her daughter Nancy, grandchildren Brendon Langer and Courtney Langer; her son in-law Howie French and his wife Jayne, granddaughter Kaitlyn French and her partner Dwayne; her son in-law George Jackowski, grandchildren Damian Jackowski and his wife Ann, Austin Jackowski and his wife Gabby, Wyatt Jackowski, Rachelle Mac Sweeney and her husband Garrett, and their three children. Sophie was blessed to have many, many wonderful memories and fun times with her great-grandchildren Sophia, Garrett Jr, and Madeline, who saw her regularly and will miss her dearly. A Babcia to many, Sophie is lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews, their children, and many extended family and close friends who will miss her smile, her laugh, and her quick wit.
The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to Tinn DeLara, Anne Revil, Helen Hai Hong Shen, and all those who cared and kept her going over the years.
Sto lat: Good Wishes, Good Health, and a Long Prosperous Life!
In lieu of donations, flowers are welcome.
