I was one of the first patients at Dr. Devitt's practice on Leslie Street. He was a fine physician and a wonderful human being with a great sense of humor. He would ask me to take a late appointment so that we could have a chat on varied subjects. Few years later I got transferred overseas and worked in the Middle East and then US. Every time I visited Toronto I made sure I saw him and we had loads to talk about from my travels and work that I did. I miss his taking interest in the world affairs, global economy and religions. I and my wife miss to this day his gentle manners and his way of putting people at ease. He has left a legacy of professionalism and kindness towards fellow human beings. Dr. Devitt, you are missed when we need a warm smile and a kind helping hand.

I was moved to read about Dr. Devitt's passing.  He was always a kind and gentle soul, and very patient with me, and my family.  He removed a raisin from my nose when I was two, and eventually, years later, delivered both my children.   I will always remember Dr. Devitt for his charm, humility, and kindness.  Rest in peace and I know much time has passed, but condolences to friends and family.

I met Dr. Devitt many years ago and we always had something to laugh about, we discussed Golf,and his trips to Florida and also trips up North.. I don't remember really feeling sick whenever I visited him.. and I always felt better in the end..he was fun and a joy to talk to..and a great doctor..there were really no problems that he could not solve with his little pad.. he wrote in latin and everyone was happy.. my husband new him, and two of my three sons, also new him...we will miss him greatly. Let there be no more sorrow.

Dear Dr. Devitt; Today, October 2, 2009, you were laid to your final resting place in God's arms. In this world you will be greatly missed. You have been our beloved doctor for 22 years. Your helping hands and sunny disposition guided us through many difficult times. Thank you for all that. Dear Barb, I was shocked to read the obituary of your husband Tom this morning as I searched for the notice of the mother of a colleague. Please accept my sincere condolences. May the many happy memories sustain you and your family in your grief and may the love, caring and concern of friends help you in the difficult time ahead. My family knows him as Dr. Devitt. His kind gentle manner and smile greeted us every time we needed him. We shared good stories and bad stories. We shared good jokes and bad jokes and I shared my gefilte fish with him every Passover. I was stunned when I found out Dr. Devitt passed. He was like a father to me. I was referred to Dr. Devitt by a friend when I was in university. Being a young person at the time, living on your own in Toronto, I always felt like Dr. Devitt was one of my parents (a father) to go to for advise. He joked, made me laugh, was stern like a father would be, because he always had my best interests at heart. I used to go to him for doctors appointments when needed or once a year, which he requested I do. He always gave me the best advise on health and that I should look after myself, based on family medical history. I used to talk to him about anything, from just banter, about girlfriends, or if I had a question on other things. Dr. Devitt was always a constant, always there...I like to think Dr. Devitt had many sons and daughters, from his practice. He was a great doctor. I will miss him dearly. I will always have fond memories of Dr. Devitt and won't forget him.

To Dr. Devitt's Family: We were shocked to hear of Dr. Devitt's passing and our heartful sympathy goes out to each of you. Dr. Devitt was a wonderful man and we felt privileged to have him as our family doctor for over 25 years. We left Toronto 5 years ago & the hardest part of that was giving up Dr. Devitt. We will forever be grateful for his expertise and caring support. His insightfulness & humour were other gifts he shared with us all. He left us much too soon. We only found out about the passing of Dr. Devitt when we tried to get in touch with his office and then googled him. How very sad to learn of the passing of such a wonderful man whom we have had the priviledge to know since the early '70's until we moved to the Brighton area. We have been his patients right up to 4 years ago, and my son thinks he is still a patient! We have had many friendly chats when we go for our annual physicals, as my sons are around the same age as yours. We will surely miss him and pass condolences to your family. Regret that we only learned of his passing so late.

I remember when Tommy (Tom, as a teenager, later Tommy again and still later Tom, I see) decided to become a doctor. He and I were about eight years old and he had discovered a nest of rabbits under a rock in the flower garden in front of the family's house at 48 Wanless Crescent. The family will remember this. The baby rabbits had lesions with maggots growing in them. Tommy borrowed a pair of surgical forceps from Dr James Key, the renowned heart surgeon, who was another of our neighbours and proceeded to treat the bunnies. He told me he was going to become a doctor! We were close friends as children and shared all our childhood secrets together, but drifted apart through our high school years. I stood as groomsman at his wedding and the last time we met was at the funeral parlour when my mother died in 1981. I have thought of him often throughout my life - and still do. Thinking of him this week, I found his obit on the internet and am saddened. Tom was my special childhood friend. I respected his parents - and really loved watching their 16 mil films of their trip to Brazil(?). Lawrie was the tall, big brother whom I thought completely the best big brother ever! Terry seemed to me a big talent developing, while big sister Theda was as glamourous as any Hollywood star and three times as bright! I loved this family and Tom, trying to save the bunnies with Dr Key's forceps(unfortunately, the bunnies all died... but that's life in the world of bunnies), was my best friend. Through the later years (after 1981), I didn't contact him. I thought: if he wants to contact me, he can do that. Now, I regret that and wish I had taken the initiative. I've thought of him and noted with pleasure that he progressed from eight-year-old bunny savior to respected doctor of people - how wonderful to see a childhood dream come true and to see the love and respect that he gained throughout his life! He lived a good life, did good things and the respect in which he is held by others is the only testament necessary to prove that.

Dear Mrs Devitt and children - It was almost 40 years ago that I lived across the street and babysat for your family in Thornhill. I was so saddened to recently come across the news of Dr. Devitt's passing. I remember him as such a fun loving, kind man who paid a teenage babysitter very well. My deepest condolences to the Devitt family. I just found out a couple of days ago about the passing of the best family doctor I've ever known. I was a patient of the good Doctor from the very early 70's, (I was about 6 years old) and Dr. Devitt even delivered my sister Cindy. My father Craig and mother Helen even recommended Dr. Devitt to their friends and associates. Dr. Devitt was like.....well........he was the Mr. Dressup (Ernie Coombs) of doctors to me. I always looked forward to seeing him, and listening to his advice and jokes. I remember seeing Robb's artwork proudly displayed in the reception room area. I always thought to myself how nice it is to have such a proud father as Dr. Devitt. Even though there were long gaps between my visits (due to my parents divorcing and my general good health) Dr. Devitt never forgot how hurt I was (and always asked about my parents and sister) and was so supportive and reassuring of my future. I feel regret that the good Doctor did not know (my last visit was in 1999 for advice) that I had changed my career path, and decided to be a teacher. I've been now living and teaching in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China for the past 4 years. You will be truly missed my good Doctor. I feel a trusted adviser and friend has left this world much too soon.....not only for me but for all your family, extended family (patients), and friends. You were a very good doctor, and a very good person. This world needs more people like you Dr. Devitt.

To Mrs Devitt and Family, I cannot express the shock and sadness I felt at hearing that Tom had died. I can only imagine what you and the family are going through at this time. I first met Tom when I was a young nursing student on the maternity ward at North York General Hospital in 1973. I was extremely impressed by the way he cared about his patients. The time he spent listening to their concerns, sharing a laugh and just making them feel better merely from his visit. I decided then and there that this was the kind of doctor I wanted. Tom graciously agreed to take me on as a patient. That was 36 years ago. In all that time and to this day, I have never regretted putting my trust in him. . It is a rare individual who can impact the lives of so many in such a positive way. I feel very fortunate to be able to call him not only my doctor, my colleague but a friend. My condolences to Dr Devitts family I have only found out today October 28 of your loss and I am sorry I missed the opportunity to celebrate his life on October 20th. He was an inspiration to me in the past 38 years (since I was 16) as my Doctor and ultimately my friend. A trip to the doctor is not something you are supposed to look forward to but I can honestly say it was something I always enjoyed. We would catch up, talk about our latest challenges with golf and ultimately deal with what ever the medical reason I had come in. Because of excellent health I had not seen Tom allot in the last few years and it is with profound sadness that today I realize I will never again get to share a laugh with one of my most cherished friends. In the early 1970's we were searching for a new family doctor after losing our previous family physician, Dr. Anchelson, who had passed away after suffering a heart attack. One of our friends told us to contact a doctor who had recently opened a practice. They told us that this doctor was just a "great guy, really down to earth and friendly, always had a joke to tell you and had no problem calling a spade, a spade." All of which proved to be accurate and true. Dr. Devitt has been our family physician since that time and has cared for my father, mother, two brothers, sister-in-law, our two children, nieces and nephews. When we learned of his passing we felt for his family in losing such a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather, but we also believe that the world has lost a wonderful one-of-a kind human being who will be greatly missed.

Dear Barb and the Devitt family, My condolences to you and everyone in your family. I was saddened and totally shocked by the news of Dr. Devitt's passing. He was so full of life that he gave one the impression he'd always be around. I became a patient of Dr. Devitt in January 1980, before I got married. Then he became my husband's family doctor. When our son was born in 1985, the staff at NYGH asked me for his family doctor's name, and of course it was Dr. Devitt! Throughout all these years he took exceptionally good care of our family, being there for us during various crises. I was sick for seven months in 1999/2000, and at one point I brought in some Chinese herbal medicine for him to look at. Instead of being outraged or shocked, he told me that if it worked for me, then I should continue taking it. His open-mindedness and supportive attitude was a tremendous relief to me, and definitely helped in my eventual recovery. Afterwards, he would refer to my recovery as a self-directed treatment, and jokingly told me I was practising medicine without a licence, for which I could be sued! He had compassion and empathy for his patients as well. Last year when my husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, he told me how sorry he was - he knew firsthand what the condition entailed, and he was sincere in his sympathy. When I knew that he appreciated good food, I introduced him and Barb to the yellow mangoes - and he loved them! Every time I went to see him, he would comment on how even his grand-daughter loved them, and insisted on eating an entire one all by herself. Stories like these made it worthwhile to "see the doctor", and I always felt better afterwards, even before taking any medication. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

Bonnie and I send our deepest condolences to the Devitt Family. Dr. Tom was our family doctor since 1972 up until we moved to North Bay in 2002. He delivered our son and daughter back in 1973 and 1975. To this day we have never had a man of medicine so knowledgeable, dedicated and concerned for your well being. When visiting his office, we all looked forward to hearing a new joke and you always felt like you were seeing a true friend not just your doctor. His passing has come as a real shock to us as Dr. Tom felt like a person who would always be around. We will miss you Tom ,but we are sure your valued services will be needed in your Higher Place.

Dr. Devitt has been our family doctor for 32 years and his sudden passing has deeply affected us, especially my daughter who has known Dr. Devitt her entire life. Dr. Devitt was there to give birth to her 28 years ago, and he was there to assist her through many anxious and joyful moments of raising her own 14 month old baby boy. We will always remember Dr. Devitt’s kind and comforting manner. He will be deeply missed and impossible to replace. He would always greet us and leave us with a smile, take time to tell us an interesting story and we always somehow felt better after we left his office, regardless of how badly we had felt entering. It is with great shock and sadness that we learned of the passing of our beloved Dr. Devitt. I have been a patient of his since I was 8 years old, over 35 years ago and could never imagine being treated by another family doctor. He was more than just a doctor; he was a kind-hearted listener and advisor in both difficult and joyous times. He always told you just how it was without beating around the bush. He came to our home for a housecall when my grandmother was ill many, many years ago and paid special attention to see her when she was admitted to a nursing home and later NYGH before her death. He delivered both my daughter Chelsea and son Christopher and has been a wonderful doctor over the years to both of them as well as my husband Derek and myself. When Chelsea was admitted to NYGH with appendicitis he made a point to come and visit her on her 3rd day there to make sure we were getting the proper treatment. He always had a great joke to share and loved to doodle when explaining something to us. He was more than just a doctor; he was a part of our lives. We always felt so extremely lucky to have such a caring and involved doctor in our lives and always wondered just what we would do when he one day retired. We never imagined that we would lose him this way or still so early in his life. He was truly a blessing to us as a family and our deepest condolences go out to his wife Barbara and his children and grandchildren. To Dr. Devitt's wife and family: I was so shocked and so very sad when I heard the news today that Dr. Devitt has passed away. Dr. Devitt has been my doctor and my family's doctor for many years. My parents also had Dr. Devitt as their family doctor for many years. My father passed away two years ago but my mother is still alive at eighty years old. She too could not believe it when she heard the news. Dr. Devitt was such a nice man......kind and caring and with a great sense of humour. We will miss him very, very much. I bragged about Tom Devitt, "MY" Dr., for 27 years...I'll continue to brag about him. For almost 33 years, Tom was our family doctor, mentor and friend. During all that time his knowledge, good humour, genuine kindness and endless patience were always a tremendous source of hope and inspiration to Sylvia and I and our family. I am sure that just like ourselves, many others believed he would always be there for us, to listen to us, and to heal us in body and mind. We were then just shocked to hear that he himself had been diagnosed with a condition which unhappily has in time afflicted so many others, our own family included. Our family have been blessed by such a fine doctor for over 30 years. We send our very deepest sympathy to you and all your family. Dr Devitt will certainly be missed but never forgotten by us. We loved his bright, lively mind. His ability to express himself so well and the variety of subjects, in conversation, we have had with him over the years. On one occasion I came out of his surgery with a recipe as well as a prescription!! He was a man of character who loved to talk about the wit and wisdom of Winston Churchill and, like him, he leaves a void in all our hearts.

I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to the Devitt family. Dr. Devitt was my physician since I was a young girl as my father (Andrew Halmagyi) only wanted us to see the best and most trusted doctor. Going to see him was always a pleasure. Physicals weren't so bad because that meant we would get to chat for at least a half hour instead of a quick 15 minutes. Dr. Devitt delivered all 4 of my boys. One of my twins (Jeremy) is Jeremy Devitt Marinelli in honour of this wonderful man. He almost missed the delivery of the twins but I was determined not to give birth until he got there. He was so excited about delivering the twins. We are all still so devestated by this news. He was a man with so much love for his family and children. He will be so greatly missed and, honestly, he was such a beautiful man inside and out who touched my family's life so greatly. I send you all my heartfelt condolences.

To the family of Dr. Devitt: I would like to pass along my deepest condolences. Dr. Devitt was part of my families life for almost 38 years. I was a child myself when our family became part of his practice and he was there for many parts of our life. When my mother gave birth to the first triplets to be born in North York General Hospital in 1975 I remember him telling me the story how he and what seemed like a hundred people were in the delivery room for this amazing event. During the birth of my two children he was in the labour room helping me along, rubbing my back with my husband and generally just helping us through the whole process. When ever I went for an appointment he always had some funny story to tell; his sense of humour was so great and was part of who he was. I don't need to tell you what an amazing man he was as you would know this as his wife, his child, his friend. Please know that there are many people thinking fond memories of Dr. Tom and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We share in your loss. Our extended family went to Dr. Devitt for the last almost 40 years. He was such a kind and wonderful man. We send you our sympathy and love will always remember his many kindnesses. He always had time for each patient. Always made each one feel special. We will miss him.

My deepest condolences to the Devitt Family. I have only known Tom for the past two years as a pharmaceutical representative. In those short two years, I've witnessed more compassion, respect, intelligence, and a sincere appreciation for life in one man that others don't show in a lifetime. I have the privilege of comparing Tom to hundreds of other physicians, and I can confidently state that Tom is an absolute gold standard. It would be a mistake to say that the world became dimmer on September 28, 2009. Instead, Tom in one way or another made all of our lives better and brighter. Tom's candle continues to burn in all of us, and together we will only continue to burn brighter in the future because of his influence. I will always remember you.

Our family mourns Dr. Devitt. He was our family doctor for almost 40 years. Our son and daughter left Toronto but continued to return to him for health concerns. Dr Devitt always helped our son Bry to acquire antivenin for his reptile zoo. Niece Stacey and my brother Ron and wife Shelley also went to him. He was an amazingly kind and considerate man.

The DiFlorio Family has known Dr. Devitt for 32 years. He has been our doctor, our friend, our teacher and our mentor for all this time. We moved away to Thornton, and yet could not bring ourselves to change doctors. He delivered all our children, Ashley, Joey and Alanah with the greatest skill and joke telling abilities the world has ever known. We consider Dr. Devitt a family member. He was a good sport even when our children were set up by their grandmother to ambush him with squirt cameras! He got soaked and loved every minute of it. He was ready for the kids during the next visit with a Super Soaker Squirt Gun! Dr. Devitt had the pleasure of living his dream. He loved medicine and loved caring for the sick. To the Devitt Family: Dr. Devitt was my first family doctor as a young adult and I believe I was one of his patients during his first year of practicing medicine. And remained his patient for almost twenty years before I moved out of the Willowdale area. I was thus very very saddened to hear of his early passing as I have wonderful memories of Dr. Devitt. I am presently 42 years old, and recall seeing Dr. T from when I was about 6 or 7. After finishing high school, and then going to University, Dr. T, as he always did, would ask how I was doing and what was going on in my life. I often forgot that I was here for a medical issue, but always felt at ease with his relaxed attitude. He would remind me that "your mom is always worried about you that you work too much and are not at home enough"!! He took care of my medical needs, and would ask me if I am still playing hockey. Since my parents (Monisha and Apurba) made regular visits, they would update Dr. T on both my personal and professional life. My mother would bring a photo album with my kids in it, and then it would be a "grand parent" discussion, and I know he was thrilled with his new role!! When I would come for my once per year annual, Dr. T would relay to me all of my history as he had remembered what my mother had told him. I felt that I knew a little about his "main" family (his beloved wife, kids, and grandkids - he even talked about his own dad -actuary i think?) and how important all of you were to him. Dr. T was more of a friend and not "just a doctor", but I am sure that it was this sentiment that made him such a wonderful physician. When one of my kids was born with a rare condition, he discussed it with me as I "cross-examined" him with my knowledge (I am a litigation lawyer so its hard for me to avoid) and to which Dr. T replied "Oh no, here you go with your internet MD again - you lawyers will never cease to amaze me!" He had even given me his brother in law's name (who was a real estate lawyer) when I was going through the articling process. Just as always, Dr. T was there to help. I know your family has suffered a tremendous loss, but as someone who had his life touched for 35 years with Dr. T, he made a difference because he cared and I dont think that any doctor could ever replace my Dr T!!

Dr Devitt was my family Doc for many decades and also delivered a daughter. I have read the condolences and they are heart breaking.He was the kindest, smartest, most caring doc possible and I really feel sorrow for his family ....there will be such a void of a truly splendid human being. I cant understand why such a fine person has died so young. Dr Devitt was a paragon of decency and one of a kind. Life is so unfair. to barb and family ... i met tom when i joined zeta psi fraternity at U of T ... even as an undergraduate he was a man with a thoughtful and serious side, a good man to consult with a question or problem, and when he set up his medical practice he was an obvious choice as the only personal physician i've ever had ... in my eyes, he was a very good doctor and more ... he was a friend who would always listen to my personal as well as medical concerns ... he had a way of cutting right to the heart of the matter and i valued his opinion and his friendship ... i'm afraid these words fall far short of expressing the sadness and loss i feel at his passing ... he has been a great help to me in both happy and sorrowful times, and i'll miss his humour, his friendship, and his counsel ... tom devitt was a good man ... craig baxter

We are so fortunate to have had Dr. Devitt part of our family for 37years. He was mine and my husbands doctor, and later after delivering our 4 daughters, he became theirs as well. We are all so touched to have had such an incredible doctor. He was truly a very special man, and will be missed. We always knew he could make us feel better, just by being in his office. He always said it the way is was, simply, with no formal talk. He had such a wonderful easy going disposition - the best medicine. He always had a smile, a laugh, a story, and always gave us his undivided attention, and we never felt rushed. He was caring, gentle, calming, honest, funny, and not only a doctor, but to all of our family, a loss of a dear friend. Our deepest sympathy to the whole family. To Barbara & Family: Words cannot express the shock & emptiness I felt when I heard the sad news of Dr. Devitt's passing. He has been our family doctor for 37 years at which time he delivered my son Michael. I have been very fortunate that I have not needed his care often over the past 37 years but always looked forward to my annual visits. He alway took time out of his busy schedule to chat. We would exchange stories about our children and grandchildren and no matter how I felt when I arrived I would always leave with a smile on my face and a spring in my step. How painful it must be to lose a husband, father, and grandfather, a man with such love for everyone and everything he touched. He had a "fire in his belly" as he would say of someone. He was such a wonderful combination of so many diverse traits, scientist and humanitarian. He always looked ahead and speculated and was always in the forefront of things. He was in the "know" and always gave us excellent referrals. He told us so many stories, and drew us so many pictures and he was so instrumental in our personal healings. He told me that your family payed the price for his work. My last conversation with him was about where to leave a portion of my money in my will and he said at that time, he felt that the North York General emergency ward where he spent so much time was the place where lives were saved. He also mentioned that it was going to double in size, but wondered where they would get the doctors. I will leave a portion of my estate to the Emergency Ward in his memory. Inspite of all his activities, I know that his family was the most important part of his life, and I know that you will always miss him. I hope that you will keep family history that can be passed on to your grandchildren. One little anecdote that I will always remember is the one he told about how he and his father would go down to the ravine and roast potatoes in a pit and then eat them. I guess that's where he got his love cooking, LOL. I think it's best to leave it there. Dear Barbara, It is with great sorrow I send my deepest condolences to you and your family. It’s funny that I felt so close to Dr. Devitt but never met you or his family. I’ve been a patient since the early days of his practice in ‘71. Tom delivered my son Michael (25 years ago) who continued to see Dr. Devitt when he really needed a good opinion and when he wanted to talk FOOD… he is a chef and therefore enjoyed his visits, illness or not. For me, I cannot begin to accept not having him as my physician. I saw him in August for my annual visit and had the “you can never retire” conversation… he laughingly said not to worry that wasn’t going to happen any time soon! I left feeling good and thankful that he was always there. I remember thinking, wasn’t it wonderful that in these times there he was, in the same location, the same offices, with the same phone number and until recently had the same staff all these years. How suddenly everything shatters and is gone. I could tell him anything. I felt cared for and always knew that whatever happened to me ‘Dr. Devitt’ would be able to recommend, sort through, and make happen whatever needed to be done. I felt safe being his patient and although I never met any serious illness he always guided me through life’s ups and downs and delighted with me in conversations of our young grandchildren we both had. I can’t imagine him not being there… He was SO full of life it was amazing. We shared some common acquaintances from high school days and revelled in stories and remembrances in common. One thing I always enjoyed was his strong opinions and his convictions. I loved the man and saying I will miss him, is an enormous understatement. How wonderfully lucky you were to have him as a husband and what an amazing father and grandfather to have as well. You still have the tapestry of life that surrounds you because of him and I only pray you gain some comfort in that. My most sincere sympathies go to you and your family. Vicki Henshaw

I am very sad to hear of the passing of Dr Devitt. He has been my doctor and friend since the early 70s. He helped me through many ups and downs in my life. Dr. Devitt was my doctor from the beginning of his practice before Leslie street. He saved my life in so many ways and through so many hard times. Even though I live in Mexico now he has been on my mind this week. He was always more than a doctor to me. A really good friend who was always there when I needed him and someone who had great patience and understanding and compassion. For his wife and children, I'm so sorry for this loss. Your father was a very loved man by his patients. He always talked to me about his children, from the day they were born to adults. He was so proud of you and loved all of you so much. I will miss him very much.

In 1987 I was working a summer job with a market research firm and I was thrilled that a Dr. Devitt in North York had agreed to spend an hour with me completing a survey. During that interview I was so charmed by Dr. Devitt's humour and gentleness that, on my way out of the office, I asked Valerie if he would take on my family as his patients. Now, literally half a lifetime later for me, I remember Dr. Devitt being with us throughout my father's lengthy battle with Parkinson's and helping save my mother's life when she needed heart surgery. The charm I saw during that first interview was always there each time we met him. Dr. Devitt was the kind of doctor that is all too rare these days, one who CARED for his patients rather than simply treating them. The medical profession, my life, our community, and the world are diminished with his passing. To his family; Know that your sadness is shared by hundreds of others who thought of Dr. Devitt as family. May the Lord reward him richly for his many years of loving service to others and may you experience a divine peace as you remember a good man.

Although I hadn't seen Dr. Devitt for several years, he had continued to be foremost a friend and Doctor to my family. He coached, mentored, taught and more important, guided myself and my sisters through our parents illnesses and their eventual passing As a young man in my early 20's I visited Dr. Devitt with my unsurmountable life issue and spoke to him of things I had never discussed with anyone before. He made me feel normal, set me up with some assistance and put me on a track that led me to a successful life. Several years ago I wanted to write him a letter and let him know of my gratitude and how profound that visit with him was day 40 years later and more over how wonderful life had turned out for me. I have just been told the news of Dr. Devitt's passing and I am shocked and saddened by this news. Dr. Devitt was our family doctor for many years and as others have said, such a wonderful, caring and kind doctor. I started seeing Dr. Tom Devitt when I was quite young. My whole family saw him. He was a great family doctor. He took the time to actually listen to what you have to say. A very hard thing to find these days. I remember so many good things about him. He got me through some of the toughest times of my life including my Moms death. I went to his house many times over the years to fix his computer. In return, he and Barb would provide an amazing meal. It was a passion of theirs and they loved entertaining to show off the amazing kitchen that would make most people envious. Once when he wasn't in the mood for cooking, we drove to Licks. It was the only time he never cooked something for me. When it came to computers, that's where I came in both at his house and at the office. Just simple stuff, like setting up e-mail, and getting rid of all the viruses and stuff he'd pick up from who knows where. Setup his kids computers on the wireless network at home. The wait times at his office were sometimes long, but you know what, no-one ever got mad because they knew when they got into his office to see him, he'd spend just as much time with them. He explained everything. I remember he used to draw little pictures on that white paper stuff they cover the doctors benches with. Pictures of cells, joints, muscles, bones, whatever. He'd draw it. My sister and I used to tell him that he could never retire because we would never find someone else like him to take his place. He started taking more vacation in Florida throughout the year to be able to keep his practice going. I remember when things were really bad, when I was young, and he first gave me his home phone number to call him. I did end up calling him once. He talked with me for hours and called in a prescription from his house. How many doctors would do that these days. He was a wealth of knowledge. He died way before his time and I will truly miss him. I hope wherever you are now, there are patients you can treat with the same dignity and respect you showed me my entire life.

Words cannot begin to express my sorrow over the passing of such a magnificent man. Dr. Devitt took care of four generations of my family. He delivered me 28 years ago, took care of me through childhood, gave me my first nickname, helped me through the awkward teenage years and most recently, helped me adjust to becoming a mother. I can't begin to think of the world without him. His wonderful personality, kind heart, and fantastic sense of humor always had me leaving his office with a smile. I am so saddened by the news of Dr. Devitt passing. He has been my Dr. since I was a child and I have countless memories of visits to him. I have so many fond memories of conversations throughout my entire life from my teenage years to being a first time mom! I literally use to brag about him, saying he was a great, approachable and completely hilarious Dr. I know my parents, Helen and Chris respected him so very much and are deeply sorrowful for what has transpired. When my sister (Georgette) called me this morning (October 2nd, 2009) crying so hard, like her heart was breaking, to tell me that Dr. Devitt passed away on Monday (September 28th, 2009), I was numb. There were no words of comfort I could offer my sister, as I was speechless and dumbfounded, because this was not suppose to happen. The weather today reflects how I feel; grey, cold and raining. I believe that even God is crying for those of us who are left behind on Earth. I was so shocked to hear of the passing of Dr. Devitt. My deepest condolences go out to the family at this difficult time. Dr. Devitt delivered myself and both of my brothers and has treated my entire family for over 30 years. As a doctor he made his patients feel so comfortable and was always willing to lend an ear. His understanding and ability to listen and genuinely care about a person made my visits a pleasure. As a person he was just wonderful. He always had a joke to share and somehow would know just what was going on in your life. With the number of lives he touched that is a feat in and of itself. I am deeply saddened by his loss and cannot imagine that anyone will ever be able to live up to the care he gave me and all of his patients. Luckily he did touch so many lives as it is our memories which will keep him alive in our hearts. He will be sorely missed by all of us.

To all members of Tom's Family, Tom was to us a good friend and we will miss him dearly. His wine opinions ( valued but not always agreed with !! ), his prodigious length off the tee ( never could understand how he could hit it that far !! ), and his love of good food and good humour will never be forgotten. Dr. Devitt has been our family doctor for the past 32 years since our daughter Debbie was one and a half years old. He delivered our son David who is now 30. He looked after us during these good events and during surgeries and family deaths always with his ever present sense of humour and compassion. We used to commiserate together that we shared ailments starting with Debbie's bout with meningitis as an infant. He also was the family doctor for a number of our friends and family. We will miss him terribly and we extend our condolences to your whole family.
