OBITUARY

Betty Ruth Jackson

June 14, 1938October 4, 2020

Betty Ruth Jackson was born June 14, 1938 to Sam Dorsey and Rose Ann Dean in Port Arthur, Texas. She graduated from Jefferson High school in Los Angeles, California. On May 16, 1970, Betty married the love of her life, William Roger Jackson, Sr. who preceded her in death in 2009.

Betty Jackson was raised in the Baptist church, but as an adult she became a member of the Park Hill Seventh Day Adventist Church. She faithfully served as an usher while attending Park Hill.

Betty Jackson enjoyed life. She loved to socialize. In her earlier years, she and her best friend, Hattie Ross, organized a social and charity club for exceptional children named “The Sparkletts” because they wanted to put a spark in their lives.

After getting married to Roger, Betty became a homemaker and stayed home in order to care for her children. She could be found baking delicious cakes for either a holiday meal or a church potluck, sewing matching dresses for her two girls, gardening and using the harvest in her cooking, taking pictures and videos at family reunions, trips and church events, singing loudly at home to Mahalia Jackson records, bowling strikes on a team and traveling with her family by car to various places.

Betty Jackson was a devoted and faithful mother. She gave her children what she did not have growing up and made sure that they were well-rounded. She would take them to church every Sabbath as well as to choir rehearsal on Fridays. Good grades, the best behavior and perfect attendance were a requirement of hers for her girls during the school year and in the summer you would find her enrolling her children in ice-skating classes, cooking lessons, swimming courses, tennis lessons, piano instruction, bowling etc. for which the children benefited greatly.

Betty Ruth Jackson is survived by her children, Stephanie Melendez (Marcos), Dr. Tanisha Jackson and their brother William Jackson, Jr. (Liza). She also leaves behind her siblings Dorothy Banks, James Dorsey and Jack Dorsey.
