

Charles Johnson was born on January 2, 1934, in Yazoo, Mississippi to his parents Decell and Willie Mae Johnson. Charles was the 3rd child out of 6 children: three brothers JT, Eugene and Don, two sister Delores and Jewell. He attended and graduated from Manual High School in Denver, Colorado. Charles enjoyed playing basketball with his friends and later took his skills to the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. Due to financial hardships, Charles returned home after one year to work alongside his family doing plumbing. After being asked to dig a whole with just a shovel, he made the decision to stop manual labor and move on to something less strenuous. Soon after Charles got a job at Neusteter’s, he met Jonell Andrews, the love of his life, where the two became inseparable and later created a union on September 7, 1958. They enjoyed driving across country, going on cruises and hosting parties at their house on the weekends. Charles dedicated his life to Jesus Christ and became a Deacon at Zion Baptist.
Charles and Jonell had 4 children: Daryl, Timothy Michelle and Yolanda. Because of his love for sports, he had all his children active in Basketball, Karate, Motorsports, but his love was Track & Field, where he was a Volunteer Coach and Supporter of The Colorado Flyers Track Club. This is where his kids and grandchildren achieved great accomplishments. Charles and Jonell sacrificed a lot for their children to provide, “The Best Christmas’s Ever”, gifts were everywhere. He was also an avid fisherman and would frequent Cherry Creek Reservoir and other lakes to catch Crappie. He would pass this skill down to his grandchildren, taking them fishing in the summers.
Charles worked for Public Service for many years, where he later retired in 1995. He was loved and cherished by his colleagues and peers. He was a very kind and compassionate person. When Charles retired, he dedicated his life to be with his grandchildren. He enjoyed taking them to school, attending track practice and football games on the weekends. His love for traveling continued as he made several road trips to track meets across the country and several international destinations, supporting and cheering for everyone.
Charles was proceeded in death by his wife Jonell, daughter Michelle, sisters Jewel and Delores, brothers Eugene, JT, and Don, and parents Decell and Willie Mae.
Charles Lee Johnson peacefully departed this life on November 2, 2025 in Lansing, Michigan surrounded by family. He is survived by his Children Daryl Johnson, Timothy Johnson, Yolanda Johnson (Chris): seven grandchildren Aramis, Darielle (Patrick), Darren (Veronica), Dior, Amani, Kharon, and Anton: Great grandchildren, Elijah, Hailey, Zion, Ivy and a host of nieces, Nephews, other relatives and friends.
