Dorothy Emma Beattie

Dorothy, born November 17, 1916, was the youngest of eight children born to Gehard and Sarah (Schreuder) Schrotenboer in Jewell County Kansas. She also had two older half sisters. She graduated 8th grade in 1931. She had a horse to ride to school the last two years and was riding as often as she could with her cousin Faye.

Dorothy came to Greeley, Colorado, in 1934, when she was 17 to be with her brothers and sisters. She worked processing pinto beans to prepare them for packaging. She married Richard DeBey February 2, 1938. They moved back to Kansas and had a child, a girl, that did not survive. After Dick served in WW2, they owned three businesses; a tire shop, a pool hall and a restaurant. Her favorite was the pool hall- such fun! He passed away in 1951.

She returned to Colorado to be with family. She met Frank Beattie and they were married April 11, 1953.

She worked at a ‘nut house’ packing various types of nuts for 18 years. She loved that job!

She became a widow again in 1989.

Dorothy was always in the company of family and friends. Family would often come to her home and she would frequently go to their homes. She and Frank knew every neighbor on their block and loved them as dearly as family.

Dorothy was a woman of faith and enjoyed listening to sermons by Billy Graham. She had a great love of reading her entire life, especially ranch romance novels. She was always up for any challenge or adventure and had a great sense of humor. She was always in awe and appreciation of the modern advances she witnessed in her many years.

She lived through two global pandemics (1918 & 2020) and was in the most vulnerable demographic of each, respectively.

She will be missed greatly.

Dorothy leaves behind a nephew Richard Smith, great nephews Rick Smith, Eddie Smith, and Lyle DeWalt, great nieces Linda Noble, Ethel Marie Brunnings, Leanna Claunch, Laurie Rydgren, Donna Jean Speck, and Melody Smith, great great nieces Tamera Ashcraft, Corie Holder, Amanda Smith, Marissa Viaene, Sarah Smith, Elizabeth Smith, and Lisel DeWalt and great great nephews Bryan Smith, Brett Backer, Mark Raisley, Nicholas Ashcraft, Eric Merrifield, and Henry DeWalt as well as a host of great great great nieces and nephews.
