Douglas F. Virkus peacefully passed away in the presence of his loving family, embracing his journey to be with the Lord on September 23, 2023. Born on May 10, 1948, in Rochester, New York, he made Colorado his home for the majority of his life.
Doug achieved his bachelor's degree from the University of Denver. In 1980, he married the love of his life, Luanne, and together, they were blessed with two children, Travis and Brittany. Doug was an unwaveringly devoted father who relished attending all of their sporting events, occasionally earning a reputation for his passionate support, even if it meant getting asked to leave for being too enthusiastic.
His love for his family knew no bounds, and he embodied the true essence of a family man. In his role as a grandparent, he cherished every moment spent with his grandson, Dash, sharing in his soccer games and indulging in delightful snacks.
Golf was one of Doug's passions. He often persuaded his wife to accompany him in the golf cart, taught his children the game, and more recently shared the greens with his son-in-law, Ben. Throughout his life, he found great comfort in savoring a cup of coffee at any time of day and had a large passion for sports, particularly the Broncos and Nuggets.
Doug's heart extended to his four-legged companions, as he lovingly cared for and pampered eleven dogs. He delighted in cuddling with them on the couch and generously providing extra treats.
One of Doug's most remarkable traits was his infectious smile. He possessed an extraordinary ability to strike up conversations with anyone, including strangers in the grocery store. He had a unique talent for making people feel included and loved, showering them with affection through his warm and engaging conversations.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Luanne Virkus, his son Travis (along with Becky and Dash) Virkus, his daughter Brittany (and Ben) MacCarthy, his brother Gary (and Marlen) Virkus, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Doug's life will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Olinger Funeral Home, located at 10201 Grant St, Thornton, CO 80229. Following the service, a reception will take place at Legacy Ridge Golf Course, situated at 10801 Legacy Ridge Pkwy, Westminster, CO 80031.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to your favorite animal rescue organization in Doug's memory.
