Irene Marie Shaw

Irene Marie Shaw, age 77, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 in Denver, Colorado. She was born November 18, 1948 in Colorado Springs and raised by parents Al and Virginia Dechenne, as the oldest of four siblings. She also had a close relationship with her maternal grandparents, Frank and Leora Jones, who lived near Irene for most of their lives.

Irene worked in elementary schools and later as the school district secretary. Co-workers and neighbors described her as caring, kind, hard-working and dependable; but also playful, silly, and sometimes ridiculous. Above all, Irene enjoyed family. She loved to cook, sew and entertain – for family. She enjoyed games, crafts, and travel; but most especially when those activities involved family. She was a dedicated and irreplaceable supporter and caregiver to her kids and granddaughters. She believed in us unconditionally. She engaged in many pursuits; but we are her legacy and the products of her life’s work.

Irene was married to James Crawford for more than 30 years. Together, they forged a life: they raised children, camped, square danced, took road trips, and celebrated many life milestones. She was later married to Howard Shaw for nearly 20 years. They lived both in Aurora and in Grand Lake, in two homes they were constantly improving to be perfect expressions of themselves. Howard and Irene travelled the earth, visiting many countries on nearly every continent, bringing back artifacts which they would use to decorate their homes and to remember their adventures.

Irene was preceded in death by both James and Howard, and by her brother Kenny. She is survived by her brother, Doug Dechenne; her sister, Linda Janke; adult children Mike Crawford (Beth Bennett) and Becki Walls (T.J. Hartung); and her granddaughters, Leah and Tiffany. Irene will be dearly missed by all who knew her and appreciated her lighthearted and caring approach to life.
