Jonell Johnson was born on January 22, 1936, in Ninety Six, South Carolina to her parents, Joe and Hurley Andrews. Jonell was the 4th child and the baby of the family with three siblings: one brother, William; and two sisters, Johnnie Ruth, and Clara. She attended and completed her formal education in the Greenwood County School District in South Carolina.
After High School, Jonell moved to Denver, Colorado to be near her sister, Clara. While in Denver, she met Charles Johnson. These two become inseparable, spending a lot of time together, they decided to marry and make a life together. On September 7, 1958, Jonell and Charles would create a union that would live on for decades. They enjoyed traveling across the country, cruising the oceans, and building a beautiful family. Their family consisted of four children, Darryl, Timothy, Michelle, and Yolanda. Jonell loved her family and she was dedicated to the nurturing of her children. The children remember the summer road trips and the family vacations they would take to South Carolina, Sunday dinners, and Christmas at Aunt Clara’s house. They enjoyed it all. Later, Jonell was blessed with seven grandchildren, Aramis, Darielle, Darren, Armani, Dior, Kharon, and Anton. Her grandchildren would lovingly call her, “Mee-maw” or “Grandma.”
They remember sharing and doing dance moves like the Electric Slide, Holiday and Sunday dinners, and their grandmother teaching them how to cook and season their food… lol. The time they shared was priceless.
Professionally, Jonell worked in the food, retail clothing and airline industries. She was employed by King Soopers, Neusteters, and Frontier Airlines during her working years. No matter where she worked, her co-workers loved her, and she became lifelong friends with many of them.
In her free time, Jonell loved to cook, going to Central City with her sister, spending time with her family and play cards, like Biz Wiz, Tonk, and Gin Rummy. Her closest friends were Lavonne, Helen, Clara, Kathy and TT. They will miss Jonell’s uncomplicated approach to life. She was never the type to beat around the bush when it came to her speaking her truth and willingness to keep it straightforward with her loved ones. This was also true when speaking with complete strangers ironically. Jonell will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Jonell was preceded in death by her daughter, Michelle Johnson; parents, Joe and Hurley Andrews; brother, William Andrews; and sisters, Johnnie Ruth Forrest and Clara Robinson.
Jonell Johnson departed this life on December 31, 2019 in Denver, Colorado. She is survived by her husband, Charles Johnson; her children, Darryl Johnson, Timothy Johnson, Yolanda (Chris) Hall; seven grandchildren, Aramis, Darielle, Darren, Armani, Dior, Kharon, and Anton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
