Joe was born on September 25, 1948, to Robert Patrick Martin and Consuelo Roman. He grew up in the small town of Castroville, California, where he spent his early years before beginning a life of service that would shape the rest of his story.
In 1969, Joe joined the Air Force, proudly serving his country for more than 22 years until his retirement in 1991. During his time in the military, he served in the Vietnam War and carried that sense of pride and dedication with him throughout his life.
In 1979, Joe met the love of his life, Gloria Lopez. Their story grew into a beautiful marriage that lasted 45 years, filled with laughter, family, and countless memories. Joe was a father to his son, Manuel Velasquez, and later welcomed a daughter with Gloria, Ida Gonzales.
After his military career, Joe began another chapter of service when he joined the Post Office in 1993. He worked there for 25 years before retiring in 2018.
Joe believed life was meant to be enjoyed. You could often find him on a softball field, playing racquetball, throwing darts, or cheering loudly for his favorite teams—the Dodgers and the Rockies. He also had a deep love for the blues and oldies which was often the soundtrack to his days. And if you knew Joe, you knew his style: vibrant, one-of-a-kind shirts and a hat on his head—sometimes a little wild, always unmistakably Joe.
Above all, Joe loved his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Gloria; his daughter Ida (Matthew) Gonzales; and his son Manuel Velasquez. He was a proud grandfather to Alyssa Velasquez, Devin Gonzales, and Anthony Gonzales, who brought him endless joy.
Joe is also survived by his brother, Frank Martin, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Martin; his mother, Consuelo Martin; his sisters, Mary Romero and Margaret Romero; and his brother, Fred Martin.
Joe will be remembered for his service, his love for family, his vibrant style, and the joy he brought wherever he went. Anyone who met him knew one thing for certain—Joe was truly one of a kind.💜
