Laura’s story has many parts: it begins, chronicles life details as the pages turn, has its ups and downs, but through it all it tells a story and leaves an eternal mark in minds, hearts, souls and this world. It began on August 28, 1929 in Valliant, Oklahoma. Laura was the first-born child of Emma and Daniel Chambers. She was born into a family that would teach her that family was the most important thing that anyone could ever want or have. She had 11 siblings (Cleo, Imogene, Clifford, Billy, Julius, Cora, Bertha, Kenneth, Dian, Gwendolyn, and Julia) who she gave a run for their money in true big sister form. Her siblings would tell you she was always up to something like closing a gate on her brother while he was riding his bike down the hill, or telling a story or a joke. Growing up she enjoyed fishing and singing music. She loved the Lord and it showed through her voice and in her personality and spirit.
She always was taught that education was important. She graduated from Manuel High School in Denver, CO then continued her education in Albuquerque, NM where she became a nurse. It was there where she met and married Archie Harrison. To this union were born two children Steven Harrison (1950-1954) and Ron Chambers. Her story was not without heartbreak. She lost her son Stevie at the tender age of four years old but with her faith she was able to press on, raise Ron and still care for others as a nurse. As a mother she had to give her child to God and trust she would see him again. During this time she was a member of Central Baptist Church in ALBQ, NM and later Denver, CO.
In 1990 Laura was faced with another life changing battle. She was diagnosed with cancer and survived after numerous treatments and radical surgery. Her family always said she “had nine lives”. Again she gave this battle to God and trusted in him. She won the battle against cancer for 25years. Knowing that her life was a miracle she continued nursing and taking care of others. After serving for over 18 years as a nurse, she retired and lived with family in Denver, CO. As a cancer survivor and an elder in the community she often advocated for her peers. She was the President of the Resident Council at The Chateau, where she resided in her last years, and patient representative of the EDEN council where she gave speeches and spoke about patient care in assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
She liked nice things and was known to all as a Lady. She liked to go get her hair done and always dressed nice. She was also known to get her way. Even when her son was working as a cop she bought a police scanner so she could know when he was available to talk. One night after a call she had called into the station and told dispatch to tell him to call just as soon as he was finished. He was met, as he turned in his squad car, with a message to call mom when he was done. At work he was from then on known as “mama’s boy”. She loved with her whole heart. She would tell stories of her life growing up in Oklahoma and New Mexico. The characters of her stories were often her family. She never complained and always gave glory to God for all the blessings she received.
On December 15, 2015 after 85 years on this earth, love and loss, victories and defeats, her life story ended and Jesus called her back home to heaven. She is survived by her Siblings, her son and daughter in law, 4 granddaughters, 2 grandsons, and 18 great grandchildren. She was an aunt and great aunt to far too many to mention but not too many to love. We love you Laura you will be missed but never forgotten.
