LaWanda was born in Wyandotte County, Kansas on November 1, 1958 to Willie G. Weathers and Lucy Lee Jackson. She attended the public school system and graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City. As a child, growing up in the Midwest, LaWanda had strong values that were grounded in her belief in God. She was always willing to help someone in need and gave of herself selflessly. Because there was a time in her life, as a single mother, when she needed help raising her son, Mychael.
In 1995, LaWanda met Richard Jones while working for the Denver General Health Authority. She worked in the Environmental Health Department reviewing restaurant licensing. After three years of dating, they became best friends and soul mates. This led to wedding bells on November 23, 1998 and the sweethearts were happy together for 20 years.
A short time later, LaWanda started working at the U.S. Department of Energy as a Clerical Specialist. Wanting to further her career and always wanting to go to college, her husband encouraged her to enroll into Regis University for Business Administration. She enrolled and successfully received her Bachelor of Science in 2006. Her thirst and passion for knowledge drove her to further her education at the University of Phoenix receiving a Master in Business Administration in Human Resources in 2008. In 2013, Lawanda's hard work and dedication led to a position at the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Contract Representative.
LaWanda was a dedicated mother to her son, a wonderful step-mom to Richard's children and she loved her family. Anyone who know her or was in her presence saw a Fashionista. Summer was her favorite season because she loved hanging outside playing cards with friends and gardening. She continued her love for gardening by becoming an avid indoor plant lover. One of her greatest passions was making artwork from complex and colorful jigsaw puzzles. She loved the intricacies of puzzles because she was a critical thinker. Richard teased calling her, "His Picasso of puzzles."
LaWanda will remain lovingly in the hearts of her husband, Richard; her son, Mychael Tyree (Tamera)Thomas, Denver, Colorado; sister, Kimberly Thomas, Denver, Colorado; six brothers, Victor Weathers, Kansas City, Kansas; David (Patricia) Holliday, Atlanta, Georgia; Patrick (DeJuana) Holliday, Denver, Colorado; Richard Holliday, Denver, Colorado; Roosevelt Holliday, Denver, Colorado; Perry (Karen) Holliday, Kansas City, Kansas; one aunt, Doll Pierce, Kansas City, Kansas; one sister-in-law, Joanne Goff (Jerome), Eatontown, New Jersey; one brother-in-law, Frank Jones, Jr., Manhattan, New York; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends.
