Leroy and Nancy met through the help of her brother Lonnie. They met at Manual High school at a famous meeting spot called “The Well”; where all the teens met between classes. Nancy has noticed him before because he was one of the best dressed guys in school.
They became engaged in his junior year, Nancy was a sophomore. They married two years later, on March 27, 1955. To this union was born five children, Leroy E. Thompson Jr, Gary B. Thompson, Bryon K. Thompson, Jodi C. Thompson, and Penny J. Thompson. Leroy and Nancy were foster parents to 150 children. They received one very special foster child named Paul Gregory Asendorf. Nancy and Leroy fell in love with this little boy whom they adopted at the age of three. They changed his name to Gregory Shaun Thompson. Gregory was instrumental in saving Leroy’s life thirty five years later when Leroy needed to have a kidney transplant, Greg was Leroy’s only match. What a wonderful plan God had for Leroy.
The family moved to Jefferson County after Leroy was chosen to be the first black pipefitter in Colorado. Leroy was chosen because of his impressive school record, his compassion for others, his sense of value and power to achieve, to set and accomplish goals. Leroy was a wonderful husband and father, he always set a loving, and wonderful example for his children, foster children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He set an example through his faith and love for God and his compassion for others.
Leroy went to work for Kilpatrick plumbing and heating, where he did his apprenticeship to become a journeyman pipefitter. Leroy worked for many years until his retirement. While Leroy worked for Kilpatrick he also became the pitcher on their softball team. Leroy would get permission to use the gym at one of the schools so the children and their friends could play basketball, Leroy would always join them in the fun. Summertime was a time for fishing, camping and vacations, even though he was on call 24\7 working for Jefferson County Schools.
Leroy would take boys from church, foster children, and our children to the gym. After the children were grown and finished their higher education and married and had children of their own families, Leroy made it his mission to distribute free food to whom ever needed it. Leroy was instrumental in the building of Bethsaida Temple church under the late Pastor Earl Holiman.
When Leroy’s health started to fail, he was very dismayed because he couldn’t do the things he wanted to. Leroy touched many lives and leaves many to mourn him.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie and Lillian Thompson; his sisters, Rosielee Thompson and Marcella Thompson, many other siblings and a daughter Penny Jeanine Mcafee. They will all be sorely missed, we love you.
Leroy departed this life to be with the Lord on October 22, 2020 in Denver, Colorado. Those left to mourn him are his beloved wife of 67 years, Nancy Thompson; his sons: Leroy E. Thompson Jr. (Pennie) of Denver, CO, Gary B. (Sherry) Thompson of Henderson, CO, Bryon K. Thompson (Cindy) of Mead, CO, Gregory S.
