Lovejoy was born August 18, 1928, in Sterling, Colorado. She was the daughter of Della Taylor and Stanley Mercer. She grew up on the farm owned by her grandfather and grandmother Taylor north of New Raymer, Colorado. Lovejoy graduated from New Raymer High School and then attended a year and a half of nurses’ training in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. She attended the capping ceremony in May 1948.
On June 24, 1948, Dean Knoll and Lovejoy Mercer were married in Greeley, Colorado and moved to Lakewood, Colorado. They lived in Lakewood, Colorado, in a house trailer for about six years. During that time, two children (Diana and Rex) were born. They moved to Westminster into their new home in 1954. It was here that Lovejoy began her lifelong love of gardening. She was also an active member of the women’s branch of Jaycees. The family moved to Arvada in 1960, where the children graduated from Arvada Senior High School. Lovejoy enjoyed a new garden here as well. She became a charter member of PEO, Chapter HW, and served as the chapter secretary. She also served on the Chapter yearbook committee. After 21 years in Arvada, they moved to a new home in Westminster with terraced gardens. In 1994, Dean and Lovejoy moved to her current home in Westminster. Lovejoy was an active member of the Homeowners Association and was responsible for the newsletter for many years. She participated in several neighborhood activities and enjoyed her new community.
Lovejoy had many interests and hobbies and enjoyed reading. She researched family history by interviewing family and visiting cemeteries, courthouses and libraries. She also used Family Tree Research and documented her information in the software. Lovejoy and Dean enjoyed traveling, cruises, and loved the Colorado mountains. She was an accomplished seamstress, and enjoyed needlework. After her children graduated, Lovejoy worked in the school cafeteria and in a custom drapery shop. She later had her own business making draperies (including decorating each of her own homes).
Lovejoy is survived by her daughter Diana Lewis, her son Rex Knoll, her granddaughters Jennifer Lewis and Amy Lewis, her great grandchildren Timothy, Matthew, Melanie, and Natalie Lickteig, and numerous nieces and nephews.
