Woody was born on December 30, 1934, in Troy, New York, to Joseph and Hazel Wohlleber. He was the middle of five boys and earned his lifelong nickname as a child, thanks to a toy gun that shot wooden bullets—a favorite that rarely left his side.
After graduating high school, Woody joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Colorado, a place he would come to call home. It was there that fate stepped in—he met Marjorie on a blind date, and the two were married on October 27, 1957. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter.
Woody and Marjorie raised their two children, Maylene and Michael, in Northglenn, CO. In 1998, after many years in the community and Woody’s retirement from his role as a manager at StorageTek (where he worked for many years until retiring in 1995), they moved to a condo in Thornton. This move allowed them to embrace winters in Texas—years filled with square dancing, golfing, and building lifelong friendships.
Woody had a zest for life and a passion for the outdoors. He was an avid camper, gradually upgrading from a truck bed camper to a full-sized RV, which became his home for six months each year during their Texas winters. Summers were often spent camping in Monument, CO, enjoying nature with family and friends.
Bowling was another of Woody's joys; he was a proud member of many leagues throughout the years. But more than his hobbies, Woody will be remembered for his warm spirit, easygoing nature, and gift for making friends wherever he went. A true jokester at heart, he was always ready with a story, a prank, or a laugh.
His days often began with a trip to the Thornton Rec Center, where he walked the track and lifted weights—staying active and social well into his later years. He also loved sitting on his front porch swing, chatting with neighbors and passersby, always offering a smile and a kind word.
Above all, Woody cherished time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marjorie; daughter Maylene Stampfl (Dave); son Michael; grandson Derek Hassell (Danielle); granddaughter Rebekka Gleason (Ben); and great-grandchildren Cameryn Gleason, Calla Hassell, Lenora Hassell, and Bo Robert Hassell, who proudly carries his namesake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers and his daughter-in-law Darya Wohlleber.
Woody’s legacy of kindness, humor, and love will live on through all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered—always with a smile and maybe a joke or two.
A celebration of Woody’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, take a moment to share a laugh with someone you love!
