Shirley was born on November 11, 1931 in Loveland, Colorado to Louis and Ethel Weisberg. She was married to Alvin B. Wood in Raton, New Mexico on March 19,1954 and went on to have four children.
Shirley went to Longmont High School, where she was a baton twirler and top tennis player. She also attended Colorado State University and then continued on to airline school in Kansas City, Missouri to become a stewardess but ended up working in banking at the United Bank of Denver, which later became Wells Fargo where she eventually retired.
While raising their family, Shirley and Al went on many camping and fishing trips, creating a love of the outdoors for their family. Fishing was her favorite, and she was an avid fisherman! They also travelled all over the world together.
Shirley was on many bowling teams. She bowled with her sisters, her brother-in-law, and her husband. Shirley loved to play cards. In her younger years, Bridge was her favorite. As she got older, she played Pinochle at the Northglenn Senior Center. However, every Sunday she would play Hand & Foot with her family.
Shirley was a Colorado sports fanatic. She loved keeping up with the Denver Nuggets, Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, and eventually the Colorado Avalanche. Shirley could tell you what game was on TV or the radio and when they played. She could also tell you the players' names and their stats. She was that in tune with her sports! The Denver Nuggets were her favorite. She attended many Nuggets games with her son Rob, but she also went to many Broncos games with friends and family, hosting tailgate parties in their motorhome.
Shirley loved gambling. She loved going to Las Vegas with her sisters and her family. While gambling with her sisters, whichever sister won anything, she would split the pot with the other two. When she was in a casino gambling, walking wasn’t an option. She ran from slot machine to slot machine, trying to find the perfect one. Later on, Blackhawk was her gambling go-to. She loved the Buffalo machine the most, but was always game to try different slot machines! She also loved bingo and played it whenever she could AND she was always the lucky one.
As everyone can attest, Shirley had a special way of communicating with others using a specific finger. This was usually done with a smile on her face. So, if you close your eyes, you can see her pointing that special finger at all the pain that she was in, which is now gone. She is free!
Shirley was a member of the Westminster Elks Ladies Auxiliary.
