I'm sorry to say I'm just hearing about Monty's passing. I missed making some of my usual phone calls. When I called today Opal told me the news. I was chaplain at the Beaverton Police during the Y2K scare and met Monty at the command post. He was there serving as a Ham radio operator. Later I introduced him to Jacob DeShazer, a Doolittle bombardier. We would later go together to Jake's memorial service in Salem, OR. I was saddened to hear the news but know he was a Godly man who is now enjoying his time in heaven and I'm sure he still has that wonderful Monty smile. Code 4 Monty.

We've known Monty for over 40 years.  We
went camping with Monty and Kathy several
times,played cards,ate lots of meals together.  We've been blessed to have known his family.  We have shared in the
great knowledge of Jesus and are assured
a wonderful reunion some day.  Telling people the truth was what you were destined to do, and that included telling people of their need for Christ.
You didn't hesitate to tell new friends who your source for life was. Opal, when Monty lost Kathy we knew how lonely he was and we were extatic when he found
you to continue his life with. We will
always have stories to tell and will
keep you in our hearts until we see you again.

Monty was a very generous in excepting me into his family as his granddaughter. I always found him to be an interesting person who lived an interesting life. I enjoyed hearing all his story about his journey.

My Dear Opal
Basil Wentworth called just before noon today-July 16 to give me word that Monty has been called for his Final Patrol. It's the one we 'combat' smoke boat sailors of WW ll will all be making. It's been ordained by a Skipper we all know.

As I count,three of us are waiting for ours as well. Monty had a full life and it was wonderful you were with him to the very end. Fran and I ask GOD to bestow his 'Choicest' Blessings on You and Family. There is a Reunion with Loved Ones beyond the grave!

Papa was quite the character and teaser. He was always doing something or going somewhere new and had so many stories to tell. One that I always loved to hear was about the time I was two years old and it was Christmas time. At the Christmas dinner table my Papa decided we would have an olive eating contest. Suffice to say no one can remember who won but we know who lost, my mother who had to clean up after a sick two year old. My Papa always liked to laugh and we would always laugh about that and give each other the montague eye. I will miss him very much and still cannot believe he is gone, it always felt like he would be here forever since he never seem to slow down or age.  I love you and know I will see you again. You will forever be the biggest of turkeys!!!

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSVI), we offer our most sincere condolences and sympathy to Opal, Phillip (Michelle), Michelle (Ed), and all of Monty's family and friends in this time of sorrow and grief. God bless you with peace, comfort, and heal your broken hearts. We are especially thankful for Monty's courageous service to our country in the U.S. Submarine Service during WWII having made eight (8) War Patrols on the USS Stingray SS-186. He left the Navy as a QM2(SS) and was a member of the Blueback SVWWII base. To our “Brother of the Dolphin” we say … "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. May you rest in peace and may God bless your loved ones who remain. Thank you for your service to our country."

So, heavenly Father add his name to the roll
Of our departed shipmates still on patrol.
Let them know that we who survive
Will always keep their memories alive. 

Bless those who serve beneath the deep,
Through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be!
Protect each one, we ask of Thee.
Bless those at home who wait and pray
For their return by night and day.

Over the years, we enjoyed many of Monty's stories...time spent with Monty was never boring. He also set a good example on how one should take care of their health.

I met Monty at Tualatin HIlls Christian Church.  I enjoyed listening to the stories of his work in law endorcement.  I appreciated his warm greeting at chance meetings at a restuarant.  Thank you fo rmaking my life richer because I knew Monty.

Monty always made me smile, his warm generous spirit, humor and kindness will forever be left indelible in my heart. Monty loved my boys as if they were his own Great grandchildren, that meant more than words could ever express.
We loved hearing his life adventures and stories every time he and Opal visited us.
Monty, you leave us with memories and a full heart. You have touched many lives, you were one of a kind and we were blessed to have known you. I know you rest in peace.

Opal,  Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.  Monty was a wonderful, kind and caring man and I loved listening to his stories.  I am so happy that we had time with him and had dinners at Kathleen and Dennis' home and two of your great grandsons He will be missed greatly and He is now with our Lord in heaven.

I will miss my uncle. He was a great hero in my book. I love talking to him about family history. My condolence to opal and phils family.
