Betty Slenning passed away peacefully Monday, April 23, 2012 at her home. All of her family came prior to celebrate her life, and spent time together sharing memories, laughter and tears.
Betty was born in Corvallis, OR to Orlo and Thelma Bagley. Soon joined sister, Roberta (Bobbi Chambers). Their family moved to Cottage Grove, OR where Betty was raised, graduating from Cottage Grove High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in music from the University of Oregon and served as president of Tri Delta Sorority, remaining involved for many years. There, she met Arnie Slenning, husband of nearly 61 years, both avid Duck fans. They moved to Portland in 1951. Betty was a devoted and dedicated wife and mother, an accomplished pianist and a passionate caretaker of birds, squirrels and beautiful gardens. She was an active community volunteer, member of the Garden Club, and loved playing bridge with her friends of the Bridge Club. Betty was one of the “Magnificent Seven”, a group of women who traveled together and remained close friends since the 1st grade.
She is survived by her husband, Arnie; daughters Kristen Seely (Bruce) and Lauri Slenning; sons Gar Slenning (Shannon) and Todd Slenning (Jan); grandchildren, Joel, Nicole, Kirsten, Nick and Alex; great grandchildren Zoe, Chloe, Karch, Evan, and one on the way.
Memorial service will be may 11, 2012 at 2 pm at Young's Funeral Home in Tigard, Oregon
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Audubon Society of Portland, 5151 NW Cornell Rd, Portland, OR 97210.
