Charlea M. Pfaender, known affectionately as Char, Mom, and Grammy, passed away on January 14, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by love in her own home and will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, and unwavering devotion to her family, her students, and animals.
Charlea was born and raised in Puyallup, Washington, where she graduated from Puyallup High School. From an early age, she was deeply involved in her community, serving as a high school Daffodil Princess and later as a Queen for Job’s Daughters—early reflections of the leadership, grace, and generosity that would define her life.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where she met the love of her life, David M. Pfaender. They were married for 63 years and built a life rooted in love, family, partnership, and shared purpose.
Charlea and David made their home in Tigard, Oregon, where they lived for more than 50 years and remained active members of the community. Charlea dedicated over 25 years to teaching at Charles F. Tigard Elementary School. While she received awards for her work, her true purpose was always the children. Her love, patience, and compassion left a lasting impact on every child who crossed her path—she made each one feel seen, understood, and valued.
Charlea also had an immeasurable love for animals. She found deep peace in their presence and gave her heart fully to their care and rescue. For over 16 years, she volunteered annually at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, with her niece Dr Linda Rowan. These trips—spent among the red rocks and animals in need—were sacred to her, offering both purpose and renewal as she shared her gentleness and unconditional love.
Charlea was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Calista Wiemer.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, David M. Pfaender; her daughter Jodine Goodman (Michael) and granddaughter Charlotte; her son Jeffrey Pfaender (Francisca) and granddaughter Jordana; and her sister Judy Watterson (Ed) and nieces Annette, Laura, and Sarah. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend, and her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 6, at 11:00 a.m. at Young’s Funeral Home in Tigard, Oregon.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Charlea’s memory with a donation to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in her name. www.bestfriends.org
