Curtis Ray Holzgang

Curtis Ray Holzgang, born March 28,1936 passed away suddenly on June 15, 2026 at the age of 90. He was the youngest of two brothers born to George and Agnes Holzgang in Medford. Curtis and wife Darrelyn, high school sweethearts, had been married for 65 yrs. at her passing in 2021. Curt grew up learning the values of hard work, humility, responsibility, and service. He and Darrelyn both attended U of O for their studies and Curt continued post graduate studies in what is now OHSU for his MD and MS degrees. Curt often said that his greatest accomplishments were only made possible by Darrelyn. Her unwavering sacrificial love for him and their boys sustained him through medical school and his entire career. Following internship Curt served in the US Air Force honing his physician skills with the officers and their families. Returning as a resident he rose to become chief resident and went on to build an extraordinary 50-year career in internal medicine and critical care. His diagnostic skill, compassionate care and unwavering dedication to patients and their families resulted in his love of what he was called to. As a teacher, he had profound influence upon generations of medical students and residents. Many of them regarded him as the most significant mentors of their careers. He believed that great care required both a “clear head and a kind heart”. He embodied both. Curt was recognized with numerous professional honors but, in his thinking, they paled in comparison to his love of family and the lifelong friendships he enjoyed. He was saddened at the level of dysfunction he observed in some families gathering around seriously ill family members in critical care. This gave him a deep appreciation and gratitude for the love our extended family have for one another. Curt was able to return to his love of Jesus in his later years. One of his sons observed, the life mom and dad lived revealed the “divine thread” of God’s love. Curt loved the time he spent regularly over the last several years with former colleagues comparing notes on the “state of healthcare”. Curt loved the game of golf and had a remarkable run playing in 137 member-guest golf tournaments with his friend Don Montgomery. They figured they had spent a full year of their lives together on the links. Curt loved the outdoors including fly fishing, and his trips to Switzerland with Darrelyn to visit beloved extended family many of whom visited our family in the US. Curt leaves behind a legacy far greater than his accomplishments. He will be remembered as a devoted loving father, grand and great-grandfather, faithful friend, gifted physician, extraordinary teacher, and man of integrity whose influence will continue through the many lives he had the privilege of touching. Survivors : Michael (Lisa), David (Robyn) , Mark (Karin), Chris (Mary Anne) Grandchildren, Amanda (Alex), Emily, Matthew (Kinzie), Lauren, Avery, Madeline, Ashley and Jon. Great grandchildren, Mollie Jane Holzgang, Arlo and Otis Bowers; Carol Peterson (Mark) and daughter Kristina and Karen Holzgang. A memorial service is planned for September 17, 2026, at 3pm to be held at Sunset Church-14986 NW Cornell Rd., Portland.
